The Williams Sonoma store on 59th Street and Lexington is closing. We are told that everything in store is 40% off.
The sale started yesterday and a tipster said that the store is still very well stocked. Williams Sonoma is best known for their upscale housewares with upscale brands such as All Clad, Kitchen Aid, Nespresso and Cuisinart.
Many of the brands found in Williams Sonoma are difficult to find discounted, so saving 40% is a good deal. Discounts usually tend to get better as an actual closing date approaches. We just don’t think that there will be much desirable merchandise left as the sale continues– even at this discount level.
The New York Post reported in June that the national chain would not be renewing its lease. Prior to Pottery Barn and Williams Sonoma the space was occupied by the famed Fiorucci. It’s reported that the asking rent is now $400 per foot for the ground floor, which is about half of what rents are on Lexington.
One could only hope that the Fiorucci brand could be resurrected. Hipsters could get schooled in the world language of parachute pants and goomie bracelets. More likely the space will be taken over by an international fashion chain. Is there a Topshop in the neighborhood?
