Singles Day is like China’s answer to an anti-Valentine’s Day—and really, what’s not to love? It’s all about celebrating independence with a bit of indulgent shopping. We’re here for it!
Originally started in 1993 by a group of Chinese college students, Singles Day (11/11) was created to celebrate being single. The choice of date is no accident—the four “ones” represent individuality, while 11 is considered a “master number” in numerology, symbolizing intuition, insight, and enlightenment.
We’ve come to think of Singles Day as “Treat Yourself Day.” After all, we never need an excuse to shop and pick up something special. Retailers are also embracing the trend. We think the deals rival Black Friday for sales.
