Clothing Less Expensive Than In 1998

There was a great article in the New York Times Style Section (I like to call it the Shallow Section) about how most consumer goods have become more expensive in the past decade but clothing has generally stayed the same price or even gone down. For example, a pair of Levi’s 501’s cost $50 in 1998, and $46 in 2008. A Lacoste Polo shirt went for $95 in 1998. The retail price in 2008 is $75.

Without saying, luxury items are an exception to this rule and the price increases at many high-end fashion brands continue to defy gravity. One example given is the price of a “Speedy” handbag — the entry-level style at Louis Vuitton — has more than doubled, to $685.

    DVF VIP, Friend’s & Family 6/2

Diane von Furstenberg is unwrapping her showroom and offering 75% off dresses, sportsear and knits to VIPs, friends and family. The sale runs from June 2nd to June 7th and is located at 260 Fifth Avenue (between 28th and 29th streets).

If you see Uncle Barry (Diller) please give him a kiss from me and tell him I can’t wait to see him at the beach this summer.

    Jonathan Adler Warehouse Sale 5/29

Besides looking great, this Madison Avenue Spy likes to live great. Our favorite Simon-Doonan-other-half is having a warehouse sale in LONG ISLAND CITY! They tell me, or the flyer tells me that the markdowns are “mind-blowing.” They are offering 25% to 75% off sofas, chairs, rugs and accessories.

The sale runs from May 29 to May 31st and is located at 38-16 Skillman Ave. It looks like it’s about four blocks away from the 7 train stop at 40th St/ Lowery. Here is a link to the details: Jonathan Adler Warehouse Sale

I’m intrigued. Maybe I’ll see you there.

    Gucci.com Presale Begins

Gucci.com sent me a very nice email last night:

“Gucci.com is very please to extend a special invitation to our most valued clients. (I read: You spend shit-loads of money and we want more of it.) Through this presale website, you will be able to reserve items from the Spring Summer 2008 collection at the sale price in advance of the sale. The official sale will begin on June 2, 2008…This presale invitation is non-transferable and is intended only for the original recipient. (blah blah blah.)”

The link works for any shopper who uses it. I had some friends try it out already. Let me know if you have any problems and I’ll try to help you out. Orders ship between June 2nd and June 6th.

I’m not a big Gucci bag girl but the clothes are really stunning. Take a look for yourself. Here is the magic link: Gucci.com

    Jimmy Choo 30% off

I just got a voice mail about the Jimmy Choo sale. Here is the transcript:

“Hi Lila. This is Zita (Zee-ta) from Jimmy Choo, on Madison Avenue. I am calling to invite you to our presale. It’s by invitation only because we don’t go on sale to the public until the 1st week of June. If you are interested I believe it’s going to be 30% off. We can start selling to our clients starting this Thursday. If you are interested, please call back here to set up an appointment. The number is 212-759-7078. Thanks a lot. Hope to see you.”

Bottega Veneta 30% to 50% off

Nothing gets my water boiling as much as a lying sales associate. (Well there are lots of other things but let’s not start with them now.) A person who works on the sales floor is there to sell merchandise not send customers away.

Megumi from Bottega Veneta, on Fifth Avenue, didn’t get the memo or a copy of her job description. As reported yesterday she meekly told me that there was no sale and didn’t know if there was even going to be one. Knowing that wasn’t the truth I put in a call. I spoke to Luc (212-371-5511) and my hunch was right. The official sale starts Thursday but they will do presale right now.

Here’s the low down: Many styles of bags are 30% off and duffels are even 50% off. The Sloane is 30% off or $1380 reduced to $969. The Ball Bag is 30% off and is $1649 from $2350. (BTW it’s only $1410 at Bergdorf’s.) Wallets are also 30% off. Ready-to-wear is mostly reduced 50%.
