Weekend Shopping: Impulses & Obsessions
This week I read a staggering statistic: Nearly 1 in 3 new stores opening in the US this year is a Dollar General. Of the 3,597 store openings, about 45% are Dollar General, Dollar Tree, and Family Dollar, according to the latest figures from Coresight Research.
There is no doubt that Dollar General won’t be opening any stores on Madison Avenue but in some ways, it’s a shame. Madison Avenue has a drought of stores that actually service the community. As storefronts remain vacant, it might be high time that landlords reimagine the current business structure and seek out tenants that are in accelerated growth mode. After all, so many New York real estate families started in retail. It might be high time they return to their roots.
