Phoebe Philo, renowned for her tenure at Celine, has partnered with Bergdorf Goodman as the exclusive physical destination to view her latest epitomes collection. Previously, Philo’s premium collection was solely available through direct-to-consumer drops on her website, fetching excessively high prices. While the initial drop was nearly sold out in under 24-hours, customers expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of tactile experience. When shopping for luxury, customers desire to interact with and feel the product, before credit card information into a form box for an $8000 jacket.
I seized the opportunity to view the collection in person at Bergdorf’s this week, I find myself neither dissatisfied nor particularly enthralled. The price point remains exorbitant, and while some pieces possess an undeniable appeal, nothing struck me as exceptionally exciting. The tote bags, in particular, feel overly weighty, while the slimmer crossbody bags lack standout features. While devoted Phoebe fans may remain loyal, one wonders if they can sustain repeated seasons of $1300 jeans– even if they sling perfectly from the hips. The verdict remains uncertain.
