Discounter Gabay’s: Givenchy, Chloe & Prada

Although we are pretty adept on finding almost any item on sale there are some designer merchandise that requires a bit more shopping agility. Gabay’s Outlet, on the Lower East Side, is one of our favorite sources for hard-to-find designer discount merchandise.

Lets take the sleek Givenchy Pandora, as an example. This bag is almost impossible to find marked down but Gabay’s has it for a deep discount. How about those Prada silver metallic kitten heels with the black bow that sold out as soon as they hit stores? Yes, Gabay’s has a few pair and they are more discounted than all the shoes in Bergdorf Goodman. A oxblood McQueen beauty? Yup. Gucci Simla convertible satchel? It’s there too. The store is also stocked with Celine and Jimmy Choo shoes that will make your mouth  water more than ice-cream in 100-degree heat.

As you already know, Gabay’s merchandise is always brand new and authentic. Customers are welcome to call, email or visit Gabay’s. Shipping is free and the merchandise is always a great deal. Click to this jump page to see more pictures of the great items Gabay’s has in stock.

    The IT-it: Sweatshirts

Sweatshirts aren’t just for keeping warm any more. The cozy warm pullovers are quickly becoming a high fashion statement piece for both men and women. This is a slam duck for high fashion where the margins are high and the  logo opportunities are plentiful.

On the high end of the spectrum you have Givenchy’s Rottweiler sweatshirts, which cost north of $1000. On the other end of the fashion scale you can spend just $80 and snag Brian Lichtenberg and Reason Clothing’s playful wordplay sweats like, “Homiès” (Hermès), Celine Dion (Céline) and “Comme des F*ckdown” (Comme des Garçons).

More importantly this item is a great entry level fashion piece for those with designer aspirations. In plain English, that means that you will be seeing sweatshirts lining the front row of fashion week in September. The Givenchy cat and Kenzo embroidered version are already cliche among street style fashion bloggers. We prefer to go down market with this trend and suggest not making a big investment. After all, we wouldn’t be surprised if all these pieces end up at Goodwill in a matter of two seasons.

In order to avoid looking like you stepped out of a Lifetime version of Pretty in Pink we suggest pairing your sweatshirt with a statement necklace, a great pair of heels or a stylish skirt. We love how Your So Jane paired her sweatshirt with a leather flounced skirt and the more casual look of a sweatshirt with rolled up boyfriend jeans matched basic converse sneakers as done by Isabella M.

    Baccarat Jewelry Sale

Baccarat is hosting a summer jewelry trunk show where most pieces are being offered at a 25% discount. The promotion is taking place through Saturday, July 27. You can browse the crystal jewels at the new Madison Avenue flagship boutique or shop online here.

Among our favorite pieces are the Aude Lechère designed wire earrings for $285 from $380, a crimson flower ring for $446 from $630 and a double heart pendant for $157 from $210. The price point of these Baccarat jewels makes it more attractive to offer your hostess a necklace than a vase. And we bet she likes the crystal bling just as much as the home decor.

Final Cut at the Department Stores

    By ManhattanMataHari

As we head into the end of July it seems like a good time to check out the last markdowns at our favorite department stores- Bergdorfs, Barneys and Saks. The best selection of discounted shoes can be found at Saks and Bergdorf Goodman is the ideal destination for high end ready-to-wear. If you’re looking for basics or evening gowns suggest hitting up the Saks consolidation sale.

    Barneys
You have until the 30th before the sales merchandise heads out of Barneys Madison and to the outlets and their warehouse sale website. Most ready-to-wear is now 75% off retail. The exception is Celine and some leather pieces, which are 60% off. We found the selection of Jil Sander, Givenchy and Celine to be plentiful and well organized but the mixed designer sales racks will take a lot more time to sort through. We found a nice Balenciaga LBD for $389 from $980, a fun mod Lisa Perry number for $399 from $995 and a silky Chloe dress for $509 from $1275. Noticeably absent? The discounted Proenza and Marni seem to have been snapped up already.

While the shoes are now 60% off, the selection has been very picked over. Women who wear smaller sizes will fare best. Don’t expect to find any “it” shoes and there are hardly any worthy accessories marked down.

    Bergdorf Goodman
If you seek discounted purses and belts we suggest making a stop at Bergdorf Goodman where you will be able to scope out lots of merchandise that’s been marked half off. Most items are still quite expensive, but we spotted a unique black Bottega Veneta clutch for $779. A red and black patterned Proenza Schouler PS1 and a pink suede version are priced at 50% off and are available. Near closing we spotted a black Tom Ford Jennifer bag for just over $1200 and a beige Alexander Wang Rocco was irresistible when priced at just $450. The selection of classic high-end shoes (think Alaia, Chanel, Valentino) in more wearable colors and styles will help offset the relatively lackluster 50% discount. We found beige Valentino Rockstud wedges for $398, Christian Louboutin flats for $345 and snakeskin Alaia ballet flats for $945. Larger feet will walk away with the best selection. There is a minuscule selection of sizes between 37.5 and 38.5.

Hands down Bergdorf has the best selection of high designer clothing. We found the Tom Ford boutique to be stocked with 75% off and the Chanel boutique has some boucle wool jackets, including some cropped versions at a 60% cut. There is a tiny rack of Dior in a mostly red palette marked down 60% and Fendi dresses are 75% off. We suggest trying your luck sifting through the “Grand Finale Sale” racks on the 3rd floor where there is a good mix of designers all 75% off. We found some nice Stella McCartney floral blazers for $419 from $1695, a hot pink Alexander McQueen laser cutout dress for $349 from $1395 and our favorite Altuzarra black peplum dress for a steal at $319.

    Saks Fifth Avenue
Shoe addicts will want to focus their shopping at 10022-SHOE. Here you will find the best selection of discounted Chanel and Dior shoes for 60% off. We were seriously tempted by the loads of Chanel glitter camellia pumps now $380 from $950. There aren’t tons of Louboutins left, but there are lots of Brian Atwood maniac pumps in bright colors, crystallized Giuseppe Zanotti heels and even some Yves Saint Laurent Tribute and Tribtoo pumps. The overall selection of shoes is bright, statement makers, with plenty of bling and adornment. For 70% off retail you can find some more basic Jimmy Choos, Prada croc loafers for $188 (originally $470), Valentino booties and Gucci sandals.

As far as clothing, the consolidation sale is now in full progress and marked down 70%. It will still take some time for the nation’s best designer overstock to make it’s way to Saks’ ninth floor. There is currently plenty of Ralph Lauren Black Label, Akris, Piazza Sempione and Saint John but the more avant-garde (think McQueen, Peter Pilotto) and classic designers (like Missoni, Pucci) are noticeably absent. We did spot some nice racks with Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Giambattista Valli, Moschino, Etro and Burberry, but none of the selections really blew us away. We were smitten with a Ralph Lauren moto jacket for $1198 from $2995 and a Stella McCartney floral pattern illusion dress for $800 from $2000.

With some searching we were able to find a Jason Wu silk colorblock frock for $300 from $750, a Yigal Azroeul eyelet skirt for $260 and a lacy Valentino dress for $1476 from $3690. Bottom line? We would wait a few more weeks before taking the time to sort through the Saks Consolidation sale. In the meantime there is always Bergdorf Goodman.

    Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Nordstrom is known for having great sales. There are two sales in particular that can send a city girl shopping in the burbs: The “Half-Yearly Sale” and the “Anniversary Sale.” The Half-Yearly sale is clearance, usually towards the end of the season. The Anniversary sale is a pre-sale as the new collection hits the department store floor. This season, the Anniversary Sale opened to the public on Friday and the pre-season discount continues until August 4th.

Back-to-school items are especially attractive during this Nordstrom sale. For example, we wouldn’t be caught dead wearing Uggs but they are a staple for school-age children. These studded Uggs are regularly $170 but are temporarily priced at $109 for the Anniversary Sale. Frye boots are equally as questionable but this moto-esque style for kids is $80 from $137. Check out this adorable child’s Burberry River coat, which is normally $250 but is now discounted to $165 and this too-cool-for-school silver spiky backpack for $40 from $62.

We are a bit choosier when picking pre-season items for ourselves but we quickly snatched this Yigal Azrouel leather jacket. How can you resist when the price is $989 from almost $1600? This Helmut Lang leather jacket isn’t bad either for $800 from $1325. A double knit cashmere cardigan/ jacket is quite intriguing for $500 from $845 as are these Chloe Paddington high boots for $700 from $195.

We can’t say that the Anniversary Sale is a big opportunity to stock up on discount beauty supplies but it’s really just a hard to resist. You likely don’t need any of these items but a discount in a cosmetic department is hard to turn down. Who doesn’t love a new lipstick or jar of cream?

We are always big fans of Deborah Lippmann polish and couldn’t resist the exclusive polish trio for $29 (value $36) along with the brand’s amazing nail polish remover package for $25 (value $38). Nordstrom is also promoting the famous Donna Karan deodorant in a trio package for $40 (value $66), a Fekkai shampoo and conditioner package for $78 ($117 value) and a La Mer set for $295 ($360 value).

The preseason discount runs for about two weeks and then prices are set at the full retail values. While shopping the discounts for fall we suggest also browsing the end of season sale where markdowns are about 60% off.

The IT-it: Givenchy Shark Lock Boots

In retail, July is always a collision of two seasons. Summer merchandise is going out and fall merchandise is coming in. One item that seems to remain timeless is the Givenchy Shark Lock Boot.

This classic style knows no season. It is just about the only boot that is sold next to thong sandals and open-toe espadrilles. Why, we ask? The answer is simple– it’s just that good. The lock is reminiscent of the Hermes Kelly but Givenchy’s styling is a lot more youthful than the Kelly Jumping boot.

The Givenchy boot comes as a flat motorcycle style, a high fold over wedge, an ankle boot and short wedge bootie. You can’t go wrong with any of these styles but the flat motorcycle version seems like a perfect alternative to spiked boots that can be perilous in winter, show and ice.

As excited as you may be to wear these style icons, we suggest waiting till temperatures dip into the 50s. A bathingsuit and high motorcycle boots are never a good look no matter the length of your toothpick legs.
