    More Madison Avenue Sales

Most stores on Madison Avenue are officially on sale. Last week we did a rundown of some of our favorite luxury retailers and today we are adding to the designer list and adding lots of contemporary stores too. Shop away, there’s nothing like springtime in the city.

    Alexander McQueen
Most clothing is 40% off, shoes and bags are discounted 30%. There are several colors of Heroine style bags included in the sale along with a few knuckle box clutches.

    Alexis Bittar
Select lucite baubles of plenty are 30% off but some items are discounted more. If you’re looking for the items with a higher discount ask the sales person to point you in the right direction before you get hypenotized by full price items.

    Alice & Olivia
The discount on most merchandise is 40% off. Take note that the designer is hosting a sample sale next week–details to follow.

    Cynthia Rowley
If you haven’t been to Cynthia Rowley lately, than you should. The designer is coming back in a major way and now is a great time to stock up on summer fashions that are discounted 30% to 50% off.

    John Varvatos
Guys can save 40% off most spring and summer items. Even some Ernst Benz watch styles are included in the sale. Be sure to ask a sales person to point out exactly which ones.

    Joie
You can now shop for “effortlessly causual” looks for 30% off. For some reason we always find uptight-
formal to be a lot easier to style than realaxed-cool.

    Maje
Most of spring fashion is discounted 20% to 30% off but online you can find some holdovers from last season at 50% off.

    Milly
Lots of spring and summer styles are discounted 50% off. Unfortunately none of the kids items are reduced but we’ll keep our eyes open.

    Rebecca Taylor
Speaking of sample sales: Despite the designer’s current sample sale, customers are lined up outside the Madison Avenue store today. The discount is 40% off but only four people are allowed in the store at one time. Ha!

    Inside Rebecca Taylor Sample Sale

American contemporary designer, Rebecca Taylor is offering up her classic and flirty style for a nice discount at her current sample sale. Today, Paige Turner got an early preview and she was amazed by the volume of merchandise.

Prices are basically the same as last season with dresses for $129, skirts and shorts for $99, blouses for $89 and sweaters for $99. As we mentioned the selection is huge as is the depth of inventory. (That’s industry speak for lots of stock in every size.) Among the selection was lots of merchandise that’s on sale from this season, like this layered organza midi-dress in black, this lace and leather dress, the Crocus embellished top and this Keyhole blouse. As a matter of fact, if you’re looking for a simple blush colored top you can go home with more than ten.

If you’re looking for even better deals, you should check out the sample sale rack where dresses were priced at $75 and blouses were $40. We found that the sample sizing varied greatly and some items were damaged. If you’re looking for better deals you might want to wait for markdowns. Last season there was an additional 25% off mid-sample sale.

    The Same Game: Online Sales

Yesterday, we spent some time taking a closer look at the discounts at our local department stores. Today we are crawling the web, searching for the best deals.

One would think that online price comparisons would be easy but e-tailers purposely make it difficult. Instead of one broad markdown, most online stores individually price items according to their inventory levels. It’s almost impossible to nail down a discount at destinations like Shopbop and Net-a-Porter. Generally the discounts at both sites range from 30% to 50% off.

What really throws customers off is the items and designs that designers create exclusively for a particular retailer. For example, we can only find this sunflower and rose floral print Dolce & Gabbana dress on Net-A-Porter– and it’s still not on sale. Then you have stores that discount items that others do not. Kiran Zibete discounted this YSL Sac de Jour to $1650 from $2750 and that practically sold out chevron rainbow Rockstud tote from Valentino is discounted to $1317 from almost $2200.

Take note, that Kerna Zibete seems like the overall winner as it still has a really great selection of designer merchandise and most everything is 40% off.  Below is a comparison chart of Kirna Zabete, M’Oda Operandi and Net-a-Porter.

The Lowdown on the Best Discounts

Almost all of the seasonal merchandise in department stores are on sale. At most of our local shopping destinations, spring and summer clothing is discounted 40% off but the prices of shoes and handbags vary greatly.

Take note, some boutiques are offering even lower discounts than the department stores. For instance, Bottega Veneta and Miu Miu are both offering customers a 50% savings. Below is a comparison chart of Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Take note that no stores are discounting Chanel or Louboutin yet. Saks has discounted Valentino rainbow Rock Stud sandals but Barneys hasn’t discounted any Valentino. Bergdorfs has marked down rainbow beaded bag and the rainbow dress. If you’re looking for Chloe bags and clothing, you’re going to find the best selection in Bergdorfs. The Lavender Lady even discounted the popular scalloped ballerina flats.
