A Quiet Hermès Sale: Manhasset, NY

If you followed our advice, you made sure to stay far away from the Hermès sale at Soiffer Haskin. At last count, we were told that the line spanned more than 900 people. The worst part is that there wasn’t any jewelry or any leather goods.

If you’re looking for discounts on Hermes, our friend Jim Shi, says that the Americana Manhasset Hermes boutique has opened a pop-up shop a few miles away . Everything at the Wheatley Plaza store is discounted 50% off retail.

There are no handbags but there are lots of enamel bracelets and a great selection of clothing and shoes from prior seasons. Jim tells us, there are lots of Collier de Chien and Kelly Dog bracelets, cashmere blankets and a great assortment of home goods.

The Manhasset sale is open to the public through Friday, October 28. There are no purchasing limits. This isn’t the first time we’ve uncovered this outside-of-Manhattan sale. Here is our coverage about the of the sale in 2013. It would be great help if anyone attending the sale added details in the comment section below.

Neiman Marcus: Extra 25% Off Clearance

Neiman Marcus started an online promotion where many sale items are reduced an extra 25% off. The big surprise is that the online clearance section was recently updated with a full assortment of amazing designer items.

Upon browsing, we found lots of Derek Lam from this past summer’s collection. Here’s a print tunic that’s reduced close to 80% off and this fur and leather trim coat that rings in under $1500 from $6000. It’s is just too good to resist.

Among the clothing, we found lots of Carolina Herrera that comes to about 70% off retail. Check out this dramatic tweed ball skirt that is about $1400 from $5000 and a black and white water-print column gown is $1500 from $6000.  Heading to a  different designer, we found this Emilio Pucci zig-zag leather miniskirt that’s a must-have for $480 from $2130.

Among the shoes we found lots of styles priced along the lines of what you would find at a super sample sale. The size options on these Aquazzura wedges are limited but if you’re lucky you can take them home for under $150 from $700. Gianvito Rossi velvet pumps are only about $200 from nearly $900. and we are having a hard time resisting these suede Alexandrew Birman low boots that come to $288 from $1280.

In the case you ever questioned the success of the Kendall & Kylie collection, we found lots of items reduced over 90% off. That’s before the promotional markdown. This crop top is $75 from nearly $1000. Here’s another priced exactly the same. It might be worth buying just for the laughs.

The promotion runs through Tuesday. Neiman Marcus doesn’t do these extra 25% off sales very often. We suggest you take advantage while the opportunity presents itself– or you’ll  be sooooorry.

And we all know these Manolo Blahnik embroidered booties should not be worn in the snow or we can jump straight to cruise and snatch this rainbow mix print dress from Mary Katrantzou.

Hermes Sample Sale is a Snoozefest

There is so much excitement and anticipation that goes into sample sale shopping. The thrill of the hunt and finding hidden treasures can get any fashion lover’s adrenaline pumping. The Hermes sale once was the centerpiece of the sample sale calendar. This year, however, those attending the VIP press preview report it’s a total bore.

As is often the case, there are no leather items– like bags and wallets. To make matters worse there are no enamel bracelets or any jewelry whatsoever. The discount is also less than previous years with markdowns of just 50% for most items. So what will you find? Silks! The sale is loaded with silk (and cashmere) scarves and a plethora of ties.

Our spies also report a nice assortment of shoes, including boots, sandals, heels and flats. Most people don’t come to the Hermes sale for the clothing but there is plenty of ready to wear along with a variety of winter items, like scarves and gloves.

The worst parts about this impending sale are the lines and the wait. Last year, it was a disaster and insiders say that there will be no change to the system of getting into the sale. The only hope is that shoppers will be scared stay away for this sale round. We aren’t quite so optimistic.

Below is a recap of brand new Hermes items you can find online. Some items are even priced less than they would be at a sample sale. No wait, no fuss. Not so much thrill either but we can do without the aggravation.

Bonpoint Sample Sale: Winter is Coming

It’s hard to believe it’s mid-October when temperatures are topping 80-degrees. We wouldn’t complain a moment about wearing shorts for Halloween, we all know that this warm streak won’t last. Yes, Winter is coming!

The timing of Bonpoint’s sample sale couldn’t be more, um on point. This year the sale is fully stocked with a large assortment of winter merchandise, including boots, coats, sweaters and winter accessories. As always the discount is a straight 60% off retail but shoes, this year, are discounted 70%. There are a full range of sizes from bun-out-of-the-oven to size 12.

The selection is actual current season merchandise. At the sale we found this cashmere ‘fur’ vest for $400 from $1000, this boys v-neck sweater is $52 from $175 and is available in a variety of colors as is this cashmere mock turtle neck that’s now $120 from $300. Heading over to the girl’s merchandise there is this trompe-l’oeil effect bow sweater that’s $92 from $320. You can click here to see pictures from inside the sale.

During the press and VIP preview we saw lots of shoppers buying on behalf of relatives and friends in addition to their own children’s needs. Some people were also clearly stocking up on baby gifts and buying multiple pieces of the same item. Head this way to see pictures from inside the sale. The coats and jackets were the most impressive selection and obviously the most attractive.

We expect that the line on Wednesday morning will be very long. If you don’t have a nanny who doubles as a line waiter, we suggest heading over later in the afternoon. By then most shoppers (ie: moms) have afternoons distracted by school pickup and playdates. If you’re brave you can wait until the final day of the sale where discounts on some items go to 80% off retail.

Follow along on Instagram to be the first to get news from inside sample sales.

Beauty Update: NARS Lip Velvet Glide

You’re briskly walking and suddenly realize that you have 30 minutes to kill. What do you do? There are always many options but most of them require consuming lots of calories or browsing boutiques which can easily lead gratuitous overspending. We usually find that a nearby Sephora or local makeup counter is the safest entertainment.

The last time I found myself innocently touring a beauty department, I fell upon the brand new NARS Lip Velvet Glide ($26). It was an instant hit. The product is the perfect hybrid between a lipstick and a gloss. I know you’ve heard that claim dozens of times but Lip Velvet is the real deal.

The formula is high-pigmented and the product simply glides across your lips. The product feels like silk on my lips and I find myself applying it on top of other lipsticks because I simply love the soft velvety feel. I went with a neutral color called Bound because it is perfect for that early morning no-makeup look.

The claims say the gloss is long lasting but it realistically lasts about the same amount of time of any other lipgloss or lipstick. Frankly, that’s not a problem because it feels so nice to put on more. I just need to pick out more colors and the timing couldn’t be more perfect.

Right now, NARScosmetics.com is offering a complimentary three piece gift when you spend over $50. The gift with purchase includes three mini lip glosses in Orgasm, Baby Doll, and Chelsea Girls. Just use the code GLOSSEDUP at checkout. This promotion runs through October 31.

In the meantime, please share if anyone a more productive (read: less costly) way to spend 30 minutes between school pickups, lunching or coffee or drink meetings.

Coming Soon: Gilt City Warehouse Sale

We aren’t historically fans of pay-to-play shopping parties but the Gilt Warehouse Sale could be an exception. The sale starts this Friday, and early access tickets can be purchased here. There are several ticket options that start at $20 for late night access on Friday and range to free access on Sunday. Tickets for first dibs are already sold out but were $25.

The price of the ticket includes free wine and sake, Hostess cupcake and large crowds. The selection will include items from Chloé, Valentino, Derek Lam, Jimmy Choo, Lanvin, Oscar de la Renta and Tom Ford. Prices will be reduced up to 80% off retail.

We were given a little peek at the products that will be included in the sale and were in shock to see a sky blue Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Carryall for $530 from $2650, Charlotte Olympia Kiss Me Betsy boots for $239 from $1195 and a Helmut Lang Leather Jacket for $419 from $2095. We suspect that these items will are variably unicorns that will be sold during the press preview but the inventory will be enough to leave options for everyone.

Expect the shoes and handbags to go fast. We suspect that most of the inventory will be lower-end and contemporary designer merchandise. The clothing racks, on the other hand, will likely be overflowing.

If you’re not into overcrowded sample sales there is always the traditional Gilt online shopping. We are in love with the stock at the current Miu Miu sale, which is only reduced about 20% off retail but the selection is really tops. The current coat sale has offerings from Fendi, Prada and Givenchy and most items are discounted 50% off.
