    Memorial Day Sales Break: Your Official Guide

    Anyone with an active email address will be bombarded with markdown deals this week. Most sites will have sales of up to 50% off but discounts vary from item to item. Below is our breakdown of online sales. We will continue to keep this post active and updated throughout the week.

    Below each retailer heading, we give a short overview of the sale and highlighted some of the best sale pieces from their site. You can also scroll through the images below to visually see all of our favorites sales picks. Let me know if I overlooked any of your favorite shopping destinations or if there is an item I omitted.

    Report Card: B There are some very good designer markdowns but we wish “the good stuff” was reduced a bit more. We suggest considering items at the 60% off the mark but waiting for additional discounts on merchandise that hasn’t been reduced as much.

    Report Card: B- A straight discount is much better than discount levels, especially when the level for 25% off is so high. The great selection redeemed this sale. There are really lots of great options. It’s safe to speculate that this Summer’s wardrobe will be more casual than usual. Weeding down your want list will be difficult. Maybe, buy one or two pieces now and save the rest for later.

    Report Card: B+ The selection is pretty good. There are several pieces of high designer items but you have to do a little bit of digging. The discount isn’t the highest but the selection makes up for it. You also can’t underestimate the value of duty-free, tax-free, and free shipping.

    Report Card: B There is nothing that can’t be found on Farfetch. Everything is there. Pricing can sometimes be confusing. In the past, we’ve spotted major discounts and turned away to find that the sale price has disappeared. We aren’t quite sure how that can happen so quickly. This is a solid markdown but you can bet there is a lot more to come.

    Report Card:C+ There aren’t many good items from top luxury designers. The designer merchandise that’s discounted is several seasons old. You will find the best value among the items from more emerging brands. The bright spot is that they are more affordable to start.  Some suggestions include Batsheva, Avec Moderation, and Emilia Wickstead.

    Report Card: C- Unfortunately, this sale doesn’t seem to contain anything we haven’t seen before. We are quite sure that the bankruptcy proceedings will inhibit major markdowns. Once Neiman Marcus settles its plans we are sure to see lots more markdowns.

    Saks Fifth Avenue 
    Discount Amount: Up to 50% off
    Don’t Miss:

    Report Card:B Most of the selection is comprised of items that have been on sale for some time. There are some good additions. It shouldn’t be a lot of time until a lot more of the top designer merchandise is added. During the past few seasons, Saks has scattered the price reduction of bags to keep us coming back. This is a site you will want to keep a close eye on.

    Amazing Finds on Yoox

    Let’s set the record straight: Yoox is a nightmare to shop. There is way too much merchandise on Yoox and nobody could figure out if it’s a discount site or a retailer with very good markdowns. Your guess is as good as mine.

    After being closed for nearly 10 weeks, Yoox has come back online and there are some major finds on the site. The sorting and scrolling is monotonous but the savings are extreme. Some of the amazing items we found include this Saint Laurent velvet blazer for $575 from $2500, Roger Vivier espadrilles are $250 and I think they retailed for about $700, Chloe mules are $114 from over $400, and this Missoni dress is $133.

    Take note, some of Yoox‘s retail prices are much less than accurate. It’s hard to really be sure unless you’re hyper-aware of past season pricing. There are also usually only one or two sizes remaining among the most reduced items.

    I suggest using the “Lightbox” feature to collect your favorite items. Yoox is great at sending alerts when additional discounts are made and is also known to send special pricing on specific items.Enjoy scrolling!

    The Future of Sample Sales & Weekend Shopping

    The adrenaline rush while approaching a favorite designer’s sample sale feels like a very distant memory but the excitement is undeniable. Even as the world slowly awakens, it’s hard to imagine the day where hundreds of customers will swarm racks of clothing.

    This week, we reached out to several leaders in the NYC sample sale business to see what the future might look like. Elsa Assouline, the co-founder of Eclipse and the host designer sample sales in LA and on West 14th Street, said that the company has completely converted to online sales and that she has no plans to reopen physical sales right now.

    Following a few bumps with their first online sales, Elsa realized that they still have a lot to learn. “I am pretty confident about online sales. I think we are facing lots of new challenges. We have to think about ways to please customers in a different way,” Elsa said.

    The largest organizer of sample sales in NYC also started online sales but is looking to reopen their stores to the public but only after they ensure that his staff and customers will be safe. It’s most likely they will implement a phase-in program where the merchandise will be online and then available for curbside pickup.

    If online sample sales are to be successful they will have to create an element of excitement and create an experience that is different from shopping any other online markdown. Creating an experience online is difficult but not impossible. Sample sale organizers can implement the strategies used by Supreme, Yeezy, or Ticketmaster to create experiences that differentiate themselves from retailer discounts.

    Finding success in online sample sales is not impossible but could take a considerable amount of time to create a winning formula. In the meantime, there is an abundance of overstock merchandise that will need to be liquidated. That means: Sales, sales, sales.

    Tessabit, in Italy, most recently made its markdowns public. Discounts range from 30% to 70% off depending on the item and designer. Most of the selection are items we’ve seen through various private sales but there is still merchandise worthy of attention. Over this way, we found a Burberry dress reduced to $770 from $2570, Balenciaga double B-knife shoes are $500 from $1000, and Off-White pumps are $365 from $725.

    Earlier in the week, Nordstrom began offering deeper discounts on a variety of products. Gianvitto Rossi sandals are $318 from $800, an iconic Off-White leather tote is $572 from $955, and this dress from Sea is $152 from $380.  You can read all the details and see what else we found in the original post, here. 

    Italist also started a new round of markdowns where discounts hit 60% off. Check out this Prada belt for $157 from about $500 US retail and this beauty case is $230 from $380 US retail. A Saint Laurant bracelet is $188 from $375 US retail and sneakers with stars are $300 from $545. More finds are this way. 

    This coming week we should see an explosion of Memorial Day sales. Keep your eyes on Net-A-Porter, Moda Operandi,  and Farfetch.

    Nordstrom 2nd Markdowns & Beauty

    It’s nearly Memorial Day and retailers are getting closer to receiving the okay from top European designers to pull the trigger on deep sales. In the meantime, we are seeing secondary rounds of discounts on what’s already been reduced.

    A scroll through Nordstrom shows second markdowns on a wide selection of merchandise. Over this way, we found Chloe scalloped flats for $250 from $620, a dip-dyed sweatshirt from Ambush is $270 from $670, an Ulla Johnson embroidered dress is $435 from $725 and Gianvitto Rossi sandals are $318 from $800.

    There are also lots of beauty items reduced 25% to 50% off. YSL lipsticks are $26 from $38, Tom Ford foundation is $60 from $90, and Sisley mousse makeup remover is $60 from $120.

    With all these  Nordstrom markdowns it’s easy to have put together a great new wardrobe for Memorial Day. The only problem is, where are we going?

    Italist Discounts Get Serious

    As European stores dive deep into sale season, we got a heads up that the multi-boutique platform Italist, was taking increased markdowns. We couldn’t help from taking a long scroll to see what deals we could find.

    It might be a sign of the times but the discounts are unquestionably very good. Starting off in the Bottega Veneta edit we found the woven twisted sandals reduced under $1100 from nearly $1600 US retail. There are also lots of sizes still available. A full-size Pouch is just $1656 from $2700 US retail and a woven style is $2100 from $3100 US retail. All of the aforementioned items will cost you more even if you purchased them pre-owned.

    Taking a spin through the Gucci selection, we spotted a floral print cube bag for $1400 from US retail of $2300, a Supreme quilted bag is $800 from $980 US retail and a blue leather Marmont with white piping is $1683 from $2300. Sizes are really spotty among the shoes but it’s worth a sort.

    Other highlights throughout the site are this Saint Laurent Sulpice is $1590 from $2290 and Tribute sandals are $390 from $600. Golden Goose sneakers are $332 from about $550 US retail and a Prada PVC tote is $600 from $990.

    This Italist merchandise will go fast once word gets out. We suggest that you don’t wait very making decisions. This is the magic moment where you get both a great selection and substantial savings.

    LN-CC: New Season Gucci and Prada Up to 50% Off

    It’s serious markdown season across the Atlantic. LN-CC is the latest boutique to start its designer presale. Discounts are up to 50% off with most of the top merchandise going for 30% to 40% off.

    Some of the highlights include this Zumi style Gucci bag that’s $2000 from $2860, a Prada nylon bag is $1050 from $1750 and Stella McCartney shield glasses are $213 from $395.

    The good thing is that LN-CC is not on the shopping radar of most luxury customers and you have a moment to digest your options before everything sells out. It also doesn’t hurt that this sale is very private.

    Ssense Begins Big Designer Sale

    Expect that your email to be bombarded with markdown deals this week. Most sites will begin markdowns of up to 50% off but discounts may vary by retailer and even by item. To kick off the week, Ssense just started its big sale of the season.

    The discount is up to 50% off but each item is discounted individually. The link isn’t public yet but you can click here for backdoor entry. Over this way is a Saint Laurent camera bag that’s $805 from $1150. Givenchy slides are $385 from $550 and these Golden Goose sneakers are $267 from $460.

    This Ssense sale isn’t exactly as explosive as it would normally be during the first markdown because  Ssense has been hosting regular markdowns since March. We anticipate that there will be a big rush of sale shoppers early this week and more merchandise will be added when the site calms down.

    Weekend Shopping: Debunking Chanel Price Myths & More

    Coronavirus, murder wasps, and May snowstorm headlines seem unbelievable but are part of our reality. Chanel raising prices 17% this month across all categories worldwide is a myth.

    Uncovering facts relating to Chanel is difficult during the best of times but is exponentially difficult in a state of worldwide lockdown. Our requests for information from Chanel have been unanswered and all of our high-level retail sources have not received any communications from Chanel relating to a price increase.

    As is the case with most falsities, there is a layer of truth relating to Chanel adjusting prices. It’s our belief that there will be Chanel price adjustments but the amounts will likely relate to currency values in a specific country. It seems as if the EU nations will likely see a moderate rise in prices and the US will likely see a much smaller adjustment following the opening of stores, in June. Australia is likely to be the hardest-hit when it comes to price adjustments. Asia and the Middle East are also susceptible to considerable currency-related shifts.

    Raise prices during a global pandemic seems counterintuitive but the initiative is most logically an attempt to maintain worldwide inventory levels. As economies open, customers will seek out the most opportune location to make a Chanel purchase. A price adjustment assures that shoppers patronize their local stores rather than flock to foreign retailers and devour the inventory in a single region.

    This week, retail casualties mounted as J. Crew and Neiman Marcus officially filed for bankruptcy protection. Lord & Taylor also announced that they will begin liquidating stores as they open. Mark Cuben started a research project where he employed secret shoppers to investigate the Dallas retail scene. He found that only 36% of retailers immediately opened for business and 96% of stores failed to comply with state guidelines.

    In shopping news, local retailers are beginning “pre-designer” markdowns. Saks, Neiman Marcus, and Bergdorf Goodman are all offering about 40% off on brands like Zimmerman, Etro, Balmain, and Isabelle Marant. We spotted these Manolo Blahnik pumps for $266 from $665 and We Wore What bathing suits are all 40% off.

    On the other side of the Atlantic, 24S has discounts of 40% off on a cross-section of designer merchandise. The entire edit and code are here. Italian retailer D’aniello is offering shoppers 35% off designer items.     Don’t miss, Saks Off 5th‘s great selection of Missoni scarves, turbans, scarves, and accessories reduced up to 80% off. Lots have already sold out but there are still some good options.

    Looking forward to next week, Ssense will begin its seasonal markdown on Monday. We suggest you begin browsing right now and edit your cart over the weekend. We are also keeping an eye on Nordstrom, which continues to drop prices on assorted merchandise. This Saint Laurent lipgloss is $22 from $32 and these L. Erikson barrettes are adorable at $9 from $23.
