Dow -32% YTD, Chanel Raises Prices 20%

The economy is is the worst it’s been in a generation with the Dow Jones Industrial average down about 32% for the year. However, Chanel’s execs have decided that November 1 is the right time to raise prices 20%. Maybe luxury lives in a bubble but …I just don’t think so.

Nitrolicious reports that prices of Chanel classic bags are due to increase 20%. A Classic Caviar Jumbo Flap Bag is currently $2850 but come election day the same bag will be $3420. That’s a lot of bank, $570 to be exact.

So if you have been dreaming of buying a purple or black 2.55 or a large or small Classic you might want to consider giving yourself an early holiday gift. However, if the economy keeps up the way it’s going Chanel might have to do rollbacks a la Walmart.

    Prada Sample Sale Update

Racked.com has the skinny on what’s going on at the Prada sale, It appears as if the standard discount is 50% off. Who needs to wait in a two hour line to buy last season’s clothing when they were 45% off in the boutique. Well, not me!

One Mad-Spy reader braved the sale and even talked her way past the bouncers. (Snaps for getting past the line. We love a bit of civil disobedience.) Here’s what she said:

Went to the Prada sale today around 4:45pm. I was told by two doormen that they were not letting anyone else in for the day because it was “at capacity”. After telling the two doormen that I was a regular Prada customer at the retail level, I was allowed in. It was in no way crowded (I guess it was wishful thinking). There aren’t any handbags or small leather goods being sold at this sale. What little selection there was in shoes was horrible – leftover summer styles from prior seasons. Most of the other merchandise was laying on the floor instead of on hangers. I found this sale to be a HUGE disappointment. I always purchased great merchandise in prior years at the Fuller Building. I guess all good things come to an end.

Thanks for the update. Keep sending them in!

    The YSL Totem

If I were a man I would be Danny Daily. He understands fashion and isn’t afraid to be critical. Danny broke news about the YSL’s newest bag, the Totem and also questioned the brand’s future as a fashion house.

Danny asserts, “YSL is quickly becoming the next Louis Vuitton, a house with less of a focus on articulate clothing and rather on princely bags.”

Yes YSL, what happened to the fashion? How many more collections of print wrap dresses can we expect? The wide belt, from 2004 was the last big idea. Will there be any more? Please, we want to love you but you’re not giving us much to love.

    New Economy: Outlet Centers

Just a decade ago the stores that line Bond Street, Madison Avenue and Via Montenapoleone, would have rather burned their inventory rather than sell it through discount centers. Today the story is totally different. Big brands like Chanel and Dior entered the outlet game even before the economy started to rot. Robb Young, reports about the ideological u-turn, in an amazing article in the International Herald Tribune.
