While it’s always a welcome sight to see spring merchandise in December, it’s disconcerting to watch the unveiling of fall 2014 before July. Spending full price on that merchandise is should just be downright illegal.
As Gucci boutiques have started to receive their pre-fall collection and we noticed that the online sale inventory has vastly grown. There is even great options for those who want to get a jump start on growing their cool weather wardrobes. (The horror.) Take this goose down jacket is $700 from $1390, this double-heart cashmere sweater is $450 from $900 and this heavy cotton knit embroidered sweater is $750 from $1500. In the shoe section there is even plenty of boots. These brown mid-heels are $630 from $1250 as are these suede high heel classic Gucci zipper boots.
Hey, maybe you have a summer ski trip to South America or are planning an expedition to the Arctic Circle? Either way, we still prefer an itty bitty bikini to heavy knits.
Attention all brides-to-be and red carpet walkers. Reem Acra is hosting a showroom sample sale where wedding gowns, evening gowns and ready-to-wear will all be priced at 80% off. The two day sale runs this Friday and Monday.
At last year’s sale prices started at just $100 and run up $3000 for a gown that was originally $11,300. The collections range from several different seasons and sizes run from 2 through 16.
Just remember that alterations are usually necessary when purchasing gowns from a sample sale. Also, all sales are final, which means there are no backsies.
Reem Acra Sample Sale
Friday, June 27 & Monday, June 30
10am to 4pm
240 West 35th Street, 7th Floor
Net-a-Porter has started to aggressively discount its summer merchandise. A critical mass of merchandise is now 80%, which includes plenty of clothing, swimwear, shoes, lingerie and jewelry.
Inside the clothing section, we found lots of swimsuits, which may even get to you in time for July 4th weekend. This Shimmi wrap bikini is just $43 from $215, this Kenzo ruffle bikini is $50 from $250 and this onepiece Roksanda Ilincic is $125 from $625– and will hopefully offer (even me) enough butt coverage. Here’s a tiny-bottom Tomas Maier print bikini for $98 from $490. Among the beachwear is this Fendi silk kaftan for $267 from $890 and black and white Missoni print pants for $200 from $670.
Of course, there’s lots of clothing reduced 80% too. This daytime sexy Roland Mourent for $585 from $3000 is sure to turn heads in the boardroom and this Richard Nicoll print top for $151 from $755 will pair grew with a toothpick skirt of dressy shorts. The Elle Macpherson bras and panties are quite stunning and an excellent deal at just $20 for a bra and $6 for matching panties.
Over in the accessories section, we spotted Oscar de la Renta earrings for $60 from $300 and this VickiSarge gold plated and wood necklace is $363 from $1800. The shoe 80% off shoe selection is a bit more limited but there is a pair of Oscar de la Renta slingbacks for $140 from $700 and Kenzo booties for $140 from $700.
There aren’t any bags reduced 80% but in the next couple of weeks we should see even more merchandise added to the 80% category. NAP usually ends its sale before July 4th but that’s when its sister site, TheOutnet, has it’s bi-annual blowout.
Bergdorf Goodman just started their second markdown and almost everything from designers’ spring and summer collections are on sale. The discount is the same online but the selection isn’t nearly as good. We couldn’t resist coming home with some lavender bags and are quite sure you’ll feel the same after looking through all of our shopping pictures.
The discount is up to 60% off with most ready-to-wear clothing falling within the steepest markdowns. Chanel and Dior clothing is discounted 40%. All shoes are all 50% off– except for Chanel, which is discounted 30%. Most sale bags are marked 50% off. You can click on the jump below to see a full selection of pictures from our shopping trip.
On the main floor, in the 57th Street ‘hall of bags,’ we found lots of classic black Saint Laurent duffles in an assortment of sizes. The large size comes to about $1000 from over $1900. In the center of there room there is a table full of Alexander McQueen mini-skull clutches and a few Victoria Beckham bags.
Upstairs, in the 2nd floor shoe department it seems as if there are more shoes on sale than ever. As always, the sale selection is organized by size. All styles– including Christian Louboutins– are a straight 50% off the original price. Some of the most plentiful sale styles are the colorful Louboutin animal print sneakers and the PVC Manolo Blahnik cap-toe pump in a variety of colors. There are also a lot of Prada, Jimmy Choo and Saint Laurent shoes among the sale racks.
Chanel shoes are still segregated from the other brands. Among the markdown merchandise is a huge variety of classic pumps, ballet flats, sneakers, sandals and even boots. Again, all the Chanel shoes are 30% off. You can see all the styles included in the markdown here.
Upstairs, about half of the third floor is dedicated to sale merchandise. The sale merchandise is organized by designer. Most everything is reduced 60%. We found a large assortment of Lanvin, Prada, Carolina Herrara, Marni and Valeinto. The selections of Thakoon, Saint Laurent and McQueen are much more limited.
Last year, the third markdown started on July 9 and the discount ran up to 75% off. There is no reason not to expect a similar pattern this year.

It’s been a long time since we turned the tables on a fashion designer and questioned them about their shopping habits. Last week, we were lucky enough to catch up with Anna Sui at the launch party of her new fragrance. La Nuit de Boheme is the designer’s 13th perfume and was conceived as the evening accompaniment of La Vie de Boheme.
The “evening fragrance” has a floral-woody-fruity sent with a hint of midnight mystery and a dash of sensual. “She is a girl-child woman who lives life on the edge, expressing her freedom and individuality. But at night,” Anna Sui continues, “she turns into another girl entirely. A girl full of mystery and sensuality.” Besides having a intoxicating fragrance, La Nuit de Boheme comes in a bottle that is both decorative and extravagant. The design is emmbossed with black and gold filigree and is full-on luxe bohemian. Not too much of a deviation from Anna Sui, herself.
Below Anna Sui shares her prized wardrobe items along with a few heart breakers. Read below to find the full scoop and let us know what you think. Click here to read though more of our Retail Therapy series.
What’s your most prized deal?
I love the flea markets. Great finds are becoming harder and harder but they have always inspired me. Most of what’s in this store [the designer’s Soho boutique] was found at flea markets. My favorite is the one on 26th Street.
Biggest regret that you didn’t purchase?
I am always looking for that one item I didn’t buy. At one point, the markets were stocked and now you can hardly find a thing. I now have the philosophy: If you love something you see, buy it. You might never find it again.
This season you’re looking for…
A great coat. I haven’t bought one in a few years. I made some great ones for my collection this year. Some with real fur and some with fake fur. A coat really makes a statement. In winter, sometimes it’s the only thing people see you wear for months.
What’s your number one shopping tip?
If you see it, buy it.
Is there an item for which a shopper should never mind paying full price?
On something you love.
YSL is hosting an online beauty sale where you can save 20% off. Just use the code FAMILY14 at checkout. Shipping is free with a purchase of $75 or more, which shouldn’t be difficult considering that a lipsticks are $35. (When did that become the norm?)
Not sure what to buy? Beauty experts rave about the Touche Éclat, which is a pen-like concealer. The Rouge Pur lipstick in Le Rouge is one of the most loved in the fashion world. The Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Babydoll is legend for it’s application brush, which is known to get to the “baby” lashes that most mascaras miss.
The sale runs through June 30. If you miss this promotion, keep an eye out for the Lord & Taylor friend’s and family sale. That sale beauty sale is just 15% but includes Chanel.
This week, marks the official start of second markdown. Almost all designer brands are on the sale list and have been reduced at least twice. (Chanel is still the exception.) At all of our department store’s spring and summer clothing is discounted 60% off but the prices of shoes and handbags vary greatly.
Take note, some boutiques offer even lower discounts than the department stores. For instance, Alexander McQueen and Prada are both offering customers a 40% savings. Below is a comparison chart of Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks. Take note, at this time, online discounts are the same as the stores.
