A Guide to the Best Markdowns: Saks vs Barneys vs Bergdorfs

Sale season is in high gear. The markdowns and promotions have been more agressive than we remember in almost a decade. Right now you can spot merchandise markdowns of about 50% off at  many department stores. This season, it’s  even harder to keep up as many stores are adding extra limited-time promotional discounts.

Below is a comparison chart of Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue. We added an extra column for promotions. Remember these are limited time and tend to change at a moment’s notice.

The handbag selection at Saks is much better than its competitors but that’s because the discount isn’t very good. We suggest you do your browsing now and put your favorites in your cart. When the next markdown happens –likely, later this week– you’ll be set and ready to check out. On the flip side, we found so much great clothing at Saks already discounted to 60% off. Get sorting!

No stores are discounting Chanel, just yet. We are told that the Chanel boutiques won’t go on sale this season. All Chanel markdowns will occur at department stores.

Here is your discount cheat sheet:

Weekend Shopping: Barneys Extra 20% Off (Gucci)

This is bound to be a big weekend of shopping. Whether you’re looking for yourself or shopping for other’s you’ll find the best markdowns at Barneys right now. The discount is 40% off clothing and shoes and 30% off handbags. For now, you can save an additional 20% off, which brings the discount to 50% off on most items.

If you pop over to the website, you’ll find several styles of Gucci shoes on markdown. There are even more styles at the store. You can click here to see pictures of the in-store Gucci selection. These pumps are $550 from $1100 and knee-high boots are $1000 from $2100. At the store, you’ll find Prada Cloud sneakers in a few colors but they aren’t online.

The bag selection is pretty depleted online and at the store. The best of the bunch is this Fendi Kan I shoulder bag with fringe that’s $2000 from $4100, a mini Wandler bag is $407 from $850 and a Sies Marjan tote is $240 from $500. We have pictures of what’s at the store over this way.

The clothing assortment is quite extensive. There is a lot of Prada and even more at the store. Ditto for Balenciaga. Some standouts include Sies Marjan and Balmain.

We expect that the Chanel markdown will occur next week. We don’t have full details but keep your eyes glued to this space. The second Barneys markdown should take place on December 7. Discounts will be up to 60% off.

Neiman Marcus Extra 25% Off Shoes

Another day, another retail promotion. Today, Neiman Marcus is running a one-day promotion where all sale shoes are an extra 25% off. That brings the discount to about 50% off on most styles.

We are crazy for white boots this season but you’ve got to be nuts to spend a fortune to have them trashed on New York City streets. These Stuart Weitzman low-heel white booties are perfect and they are now $312 from $555 and this pair with black outlines is $258 from $575. Prada Flame heels come to $618 after the promotion from $1100, Off-White pumps are $429 from $955 and these gorgeous Jimmy Choo heels with netting are now $672 from $1200.

There will be another Neiman Marcus promotion in early December where all sale merchandise, not just shoes, are an extra 20% off. The second markdown will take place on December 10th but the discounts will be the same as they are now with the additional discount. We suggest you take advantage now because the second markdown tends to attract a lot more attention and your size might be gone.

Inside the Markdown at Christian Louboutin

Many stores started their markdowns before Thanksgiving. Christian Louboutin is one of the standout brands that marches to the beat of its own sale schedule. It’s always a big mystery as to when Louboutin will begin its sale.

Wonder no more, Christian Louboutin is officially on sale. The first markdown is 40% at Christian Louboutin standalone boutiques, at the Louboutin department the Saks Fifth Avenue on Fifth Avenue and at Barneys. The discount is 30% at all other Saks stores, Bergdorfs, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom.

To get the best overview of what’s on sale we visited our neighborhood Christian Louboutin– on Madison, obviously. Some highlights include Cosmo pumps that are $420 from $695, Anjalina pumps with spikes around the edges are %500 from $845 and Pigalle Follies with cracked mirrored leather are $450 from $375. There are also a vareity of handbags at 40% off.

We put pictures of all the sale items in the jump. You can also pop over to our post from last week where we listed all the Louboutin markdowns at Saks. We suggest you contact your sales person right away. Sizes are quickly depleating.

    Gift Guide: Corporate Gifting

It’s time to get serious about holiday gifting. Thanking your business partners is one of the most complicated giftings of the season. Your presents need to represent the ethos of your company and appropriately show gratitude to those who support you throughout the year.

It’s also important not to go overboard, you don’t want your gift to seem like a bribe. On the flip side, you don’t want to send a gift a fruit basket to someone who entrusts you with a mega-size portfolio or trusted you to list their $30-million brownstone.

Below are a few ideas to thank your customers and business partners. As for employees, everyone appreciates cash.

The Baccarat Eyelit vase is the perfect item to make a genuine statement of gratitude. The price point ranges from $11,900 for the extra large but the small size is $540.

A Rimowa suitcase is just the right message to gift someone who has been working hard on your behalf. We love that there are also a number of price points from which to choose. The Rimowa Stealth carryon is $1,375 and can turn heads even in a First Class lounge. It’s made of aluminum and magnesium and is more poised than the over-hyped Supreme-Rimowa collaboration. A less expensive option is the Rimowa Essential carryon for $540. We are sure it will be cherished just as much as the Stealth.

The holiday season is about celebrating. What better way to mark the event with this quirky Alessi Anna G Corkscrew. It’s just $70 (and Bloomingdales is offering a 25% off.) You can send the corkscrew alone or pair it with a bottle of wine.

Forget about the cliché candle. This season we have our eyes on the Diptyque electronic diffuser. It’s essentially a plug-in air freshener and you refill it with your favorite scented cartridge. The electronic element is $350 and the scented cartridges are $38. There is even an electronic diffuser for the car that’s $60.

Last year, we were all gifted with a  Lineige travel beauty kit. I fell in love with the products so much that I recently bought full-size versions of each item. The Korean brand beauty kit is just $25 and is everything you need to pamper yourself before, during and after traveling. If you have a bigger budget you can spring for the Dyson hairdryer- OUAI set. The iconic hairdryer comes with Ouai leave-in conditioner, hair & body oil, memory mist, and texturizing hairspray and the price is $399– the same as the dryer alone but has a “value” of $465.

Most of these gifts are very female oriented. Surprised? For a man, we suggest a Prada card holder ($117), Apple AirPods ($159), a Nintendo Switch ($299), a Gucci belt ($450) or a helicopter ride to an area airport on Blade ($900-$1100).

Madison Ave Sale-ing: Balenciaga, Prada, Givenchy, Valentino and More

It couldn’t have been a more perfect afternoon to sale down Madison Avenue. The bright sun, changing leaves and ubiquitous sales make it ideal conditions to browse, shop and absorb all the beauty of luxury fashion.

Discounts range from 30% to 50% off at many Madison Avenue boutiques. Some department stores are offering better pricing and lots of discount promotions but not everyone has the same selection. Keep an eye out, Chanel and Louboutin details are forthcoming. Newcomer, Gabrielle Hurst claims they won’t have markdowns but we’ve heard that before. See below for specific store details and head to the jump for pictures of our favorite sale items.

Take note, Saturday, December 1 begins the ‘Miracle on Madison’. Between the hours of 10am and 5pm, Madison Avenue stores will be donating 20% of all sales to the pediatric initiatives of The Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. There are over 100 stores participating and lots of extra sips and snacks to enhance the holiday shopping festivities. You can click here to see a full list of participating stores.

Be sure to follow along on Instagram for pictures and real-time updates.

    Balenciaga
Who is gaga for Balenciaga? Clearly everyone. The discounts range from 20% to 50% off. Most bags and shoes we looked at are 40% off. Those BB booties we’ve been eyeing are 40% off. There is a good variety of bags included in the  markdown. Most styles are priced between 30% and 40% off. We especially like the Bolide-shape bag with a gingham print. It will look great with Winter white and transition easily into Spring. Click for pics.

    Givenchy
We are troubled by the number of times we go to a global flagship looking for a particular item and find it’s not sold at the brands’ stores. This is too often the case at Givenchy. Markdowns are up to 50% off. When we stopped in, before Thanksgiving, sales associates still weren’t sure what bags and shoes were included in the markdown. Lucky the salespeople are super friendly, otherwise, it would have been an entirely frustrating experience.

    Prada
The Prada sale officially started right after Thanksgiving. Shoes and clothing are 50% off and bags are reduced by 40%. The sale selection isn’t very extensive at the Madison Avenu boutique. You are better off shopping sale at Soho or Fifth Avenue. (You can see here what we found at the Madison Avenue store.) The best selection on Madison is among the clothing. Unfortunately, the neon collection was a little too bright for the Madison Avenue crowd. Good thing you can find a lot of great Prada markdowns online too. We have been especially stalking MatchesFashion and Ssense.
    Betty: 212-327-4200

    Roger Vivier
You can now save 40% off on a variety of classic buckle shoes. We were searching for the hiking boot with the glittery side buckle but, of course, it’s not included in the markdown. If you were stalking Birkenstock-style Viviers then you might want to pounce now for your warm-weather vacation. There are several styles available along with espadrilles and other sandals. You can see a pretty complete preview of the sale merchandise in our pictures.
    Magdalena 212-861-5371

    Valentino
The Valentino boutique has started its sale. The discount on shoes, clothing and most handbags are 40% off. We were surprised by the great assortment of bags. Rockstud Spikes are only reduced by 30% but Candy Studs are discounted 40% off. You can check our pictures here to see what we found. The discount at Bergdorfs is 40% off on bags and they have a few more classic items than the Valentino boutique.
