Legitimate sample sales are essentially extinct, and I mean sales with actual samples, not just overstock or leftover inventory that are colloquially called sample sales. The Oscar de la Renta sample sale is one of the real ones. Most of the merchandise is one-off samples, including gowns, dresses, sweaters, jackets, coats, bags and accessories, with a few racks of production pieces mixed in. Unfortunately, the pricing isn’t quite like the sample-sale days of yore. Gowns are priced from $1,200 to $2,190, cocktail dresses are $600 to $800, coats are $600 to $800 and knits start at $230. The sale runs Sept. 16 through Sept. 20 at 260 Fifth Avenue.

It’s sample sale season, and we’re kicking it off with one of my favorite sales: Manolo Blahnik.

First, the reality check. Last season, the first shoppers arrived at 2am. By 7:15am, about 145 people were waiting, and the line stretched to Ninth Avenue. Shoppers were given 40 minutes inside, followed by about 20 minutes for checkout. By 11:20am, barely any classic styles remained.

As for pricing, samples started at $125, basic shoes without embellishments were $195, most plain styles were $295, embellished styles ranged from $350 to $375, classics were $375 to $595, and boots were $500. Prices may be different this season, and we’ll update the post once the sale opens.
