Kid’s View: Stella McCartney x Gap

Usually it’s easy for us to review a collection collaboration between a celebrity designer and a mass market retailer. When it’s Stella McCartney you can write the gushing review before the collection even hits the retail floor. But what happens when the collection is geared towards an audience who think Disney princesses are trendsetting and Hannah Montana personifies sophistication?

To find out we took a few tykes to the 87th Street & Third Avenue Gap to get a personal review. Our critics are “Flower Girl,” a three-year-old who refuses to wear pants and prefers that babysitter esthetic. “Katie,” a five-year-old self-proclaimed rock star who naturally tends to lead towards a happy-hipster look. “Violet,” is six and is partial to the color purple. “Alex” prefers to look preppy. He is, after all, a product of the Upper East Side.

Flowergirl loved the tutu skirt on the cardboard model, however, that item did not make it to this particular boutique. A store manager said they hope to receive the skirt– which happens to be the best selling item in the collection–by Thursday. Flower Girl found the Balmain inspired band jacket to be amusing to try on but could not be sold on that or on any single item in the collection. Instead, she preferred modeling fleece hats and rainbow heart scarves. Flower Girl’s mother said she would check back for the tutu later in the week.

The skinny jeans were a natural choice for Katie who prefers all her clothing to be form fitting. The $58 price was a bit much for Katie’s mom, who said she would rather opt for the traditional Gap skinny jeans that are half the price. Katie and her mom both agreed that the best piece in the collection is the $58 pink drop waist silk dress. For Katie, the dress was love at first sight and her mother agreed that it was perfect when paired with a navy cardigan.

Lucky for Violet, there is a lot of purple in the Gap/Stella collection. Her mom, really liked the purple bow coat ($98) but decided it was a bit unpractical for cold New York winters and for the fact that Violet was unable to button the coat herself. She did, however, take home the drop waist silk dress in violet, flare jeans ($58) and the long gray wool cardigan ($68).

Boys are notoriously squeamish when it comes to fashion but seven-year-old Alex was ready to jump in with his opinion. The band jacket was totally out of the question. The blazer fit perfectly but Alex’s wardrobe was already filled adequately with blazers. In the end,  the western shirts ($38) won out. If the shirts were not a designer collaboration, Alex’s mother doubted that either of them would have payed much attention.

There you have it: Four kids. Eight opinions. In the end, we know that that collaboration will be a great Gap success but more because of fashion forward mother’s than rainbow loving tots. Now, if they could only get in that tutu…

    Ralph Lauren Private Sale

Ralph Lauren is running a 40% off private sale from Thurs., Nov. 5 to Mon., Nov. 9th. You can also receive an additional 15% off by using the code NOV0509. The promotion is running both in stores and online.

We wish there was more to add but Ralph Lauren is not known for groundbreaking style and is not inspiring us much here either. Oh, and can anyone figure out the whole Black Label, Blue Label, Purple Label thing? Talk about confusing your customer.

YSL Sample Sale, Go or No?

We’ve received many email asking why we’ve ignored the YSL sample sale. The answer is simple: We don’t wait in line and certainly not in October rain. Racked reports, protective headgear is required due to the aggressive nature of YSL sample sale shoppers.

Some shoppers reported scoring $1700 Muse II bags for $400. Prices of RTW go as skirts are $250, dresses $300, jackets $400, tees $75, coats $659, jeans $150, sweaters $250 and belts are $50 each with a buy-two-get-one-free deal. Of course their are gowns and they range in price from $800 to $2500.

Tomorrow is the last day of the sale. We are told restocking occurs intermittently. If you are so inclined, we suggest that you head over mid-morning. Lines should be limited and maybe ready-to-wear will be reduced?!

Just remember the sale ends at 2:00pm. So, if you’re going to go, don’t wait too long!

    November Chanel Price Increase?

It’s almost November and last year that meant a price increase on Chanel bags. Internet rumours are flying that prices are going up 20% on November 1st. A price increase that steep in an unsure retail economy seems drastic. Not sure what to believe we made a few calls asking Chanel sales associates if there was going to be a November 1st price increase.

Independent Chanel boutiques are all in agreement that no price changes are occurring any time soon. Saks and Bergdorf sales women seem sure that price increases are imminent. Are the department stores trying the pressure sell or are they just brave enough to brake the news? We think iit’s the potential sale that is pushing the department store sales people but what do yout think?

No, that’s not true at all. No way!

We haven’t been informed of anything. We usually don’t get information far in advance but for Nov. 1st I believe we would know about it.

No. Not that we know of.

We don’t know exactly when, but yeah. Probably everything is going up. Cruise is coming in and handbags are $3000 or $4000. The last time they went up $1000. For the last increase (last year) a bag was $1895 and now it’s $2495. Usually “they” come in the morning and just change the prices.

I think it is true. I honestly don’t know how much or which styles. I think the caviar classic. I think the caviar jumbo classic is going to be $2825, an extra $175. “They” just come down with the new tickets and change them.

None of ours. We haven’t gotten any word of that. Usually it’s every two years but no word on that.

    Retail Therapy: Sweetie

Sweetie is one of the most fabulous drag queens you will ever meet. She is the personification of everything loved about women. Sweetie is known for her appearance on Project Runway and Oprah but is also celebrated as New York City’s Best Lipsync Artist for 10 years in a row. Most recently she was the feature of Charmed Life, a documentary that uncovers the passion, technique and commitment employed to transcend gender.

A screening of Charmed Life is being held at the Village East Cinema (181 2nd Ave), on Tuesday, Oct. 12th at 10:30pm. We’ve all seen it. It’s wonderful. We suggest you do the same. If you can’t catch the flick you can read below and get some amazing shopping tips because drag queens know how to apply make-up and shop better than most of your girlfriends.

    Your most prized “deal?”
A custom made, full length, Natural Blue Iris mink coat. Fabulous! In certain light it is the color of lightest blue smoke. In other light a taupe/blonde. Extremely sophisticated amongst the sea of black and brown minks slapped on the backs of New York’s ladies. Magnificent female pelts, french hem, flawless cut. A pure vanity purchase but so well worth it. The coat retailed for over 10k, and I snagged it for just over a thousand.

Biggest regret that you didn’t purchase?
“Girls” of a certain size can sometimes hit road blocks when it comes to finding good quality, well thought out designs. Saks Fifth Avenue has a plus size department, called Salon Z, that can be very hit or miss. Tom & Linda Platt did an evening gown in an insane acid green silk that had these enormous color saturated butterflies in pinks, purples and oranges. The colors were perfection. That combination on an ample bodied beauty could be fashion suicide, but the design of the gown was so well done it was not only breathtaking in color but also in the fit. They had one left in my size and I walked away from it. It infected my dreams. I had to have it. I went back and it was gone. I hope that bitch Latifah was happy raining on my parade.

This season you are looking for a great deal on what item?
I’m just starving for a great pair of brown leather knee boots with a great heel. High enough to give my leg some oooomph, but not so high I feel I should be working 11th Avenue. Brown leather is so autumnal. A great tobacco shade would be heaven.

What’s your number one shopping tip?
With this incredible animal called the Internet, there is really no reason to ever have to pay full retail. Research the item you have to have. Find out where it comes from. Try to cut out the middle man if you can. In this troubled economy the deals are endless. Do your homework and try NOT to be compulsive. All good things are worth waiting for.

    What’s your biggest weakness?
HANDBAGS!!! Gucci in particular. My love affair with Gucci started as a teenager when Gucci loafers were a preppy indulgence. As much as I love the bells and whistles of some of their designs, I really gravitate towards great leather pieces that I can love forever. Great shapes in buttery, Italian leather are very sensual to me. I’m a tactile person, so the feel of a good handbag is very important. I only carry top handles. Shoulder bags are rarely chic. A bag that rests in the crook of your arm no matter how large just looks better to me. I love a clutch for really dressy occasions, but they are not very practical for a drag performer. There’s barely room for lipstick, much less my electric razor!

Is there an item for which a shopper should never mind paying full price?
Fragrance. Scent is so incredibly personal and should be your calling card. An amazing scent finishes a person off. It’s the ultimate accessory, really. It’s where you can be truly unique. Tom Ford’s Black Orchid is so lush and perfect for this time of year. Etro’s Midnight Mass is also a favorite of mine. It’s incredibly bold when it hits the skin, but as it settles the complexities really unfold. Both Black Orchid and Midnight Mass are big enough fragrances that they can be worn by Donny OR Marie!!!

    Jimmy Choo for H&M

Jimmy Choo is launching his H&M collaboration on November 14. We’ve seen the leaked pictures but we’ve been wondering about prices. Today the mystery is over. The prices have been officially released, most heels range from $99 to $149, over the knee boot is $299, low boots $149 and flats are $70.

The H&M/Jimmy Choo collection also consists of a great looking array of ready-to-wear and accessories but there’s no question that they are overpriced. A black fake fur vest is $100, jersey leggings $30, rhinestone dress $129, embossed croco belt $60, and shopper bag $249.

These Jimmy Choo prices are a steal when comparing them to his Saks collection but how inclined are you to spend almost $300 on a questionably manufactured boot interpretation — even if it does have the right name on the label? We’re not sure.

The “really” Jimmy Choo collection boots are $1300. Could they be found for $500? Maybe. I think we are willing to take the risk and bypass the $300 version. After all, this is MADISON Avenue Spy not the Look for Less. What do you think?
