    Fashion Week: Mara Hoffman

Mara Hoffman is best known for her original prints. This season the collection was directly inspired by the juxtaposition of spiritual being and warrior, “where veil meets turban.” Her newest fall collection did not deviate very far or disappoint fans. With a background of live celestial music, Mara added hoods and trimmings to long maxi dresses, ease to heavy knits and turbans to loosely styled braids.

Standout item: Hooded zebra print maxi dress with cutout back.

Our take: Prints and texture are always a great way to start the fall season.

    Twitter Reviews:
StyledOn: The best coat ever? At Mara Hoffman. In. Love. #nyfw
HithaPrabhakar: Mara Hoffman’s kaftan makes me want to go on vacation to Morocco immediately.
fashionsnoops: Mara Hoffman is beautiful…maxi lengths with slouchy knits and ethnic print gowns

    Fashion Week: Nicholas K

    Deep breath. Long Exhale.

Fashion week is upon us and our first stop was bright an early this morning at Nicholas K. Sister-brother duo, Nicholas and Christopher Kunz channeled Seattle by adding their twist to 1990s grunge. We are talking serious flannels and a palate of hunter greens and khaki browns.

Stand out item: Platform military boots

Our take: We weren’t big fans of the grunge movement the first time around: Bad clothing, bad music, bad hair. If you really want to step into the time machine, Nicholas K. is the way to go.

    Twitter reviews:
StyleAlt: @nilascholaskstudio @peoplesrev loved the Nicholas K F/W 2011 collection of gently draped garments and fur trims!
elizrosen: Nicholas K at #nyfw. LOVE the army green, plaid and cargo jackets
theglossdotcom: Nicholas K show – too early for this many ridiculous haircuts #nyfw

    Valentine’s Day Gift Idea: PhotoOp

Growing up, Valentine’s Day was about the whole family. Every year my siblings and I would wake up to a host of chocolates, balloons and stuffed animals from our first love–our dad. There is no doubt he spoiled us but we suppose there are worse things in the world.

Why not spoil your entire family and plan a Valentine’s Day that you will remember and cherish for years to come? PhotoOp is the newest family photo studio on the Upper West Side. Brian Marcus, who takes most of the photography credits in the New York Times Weddings section, oversees a staff of senior-level shutterbugs.

Of course, we can go on and on about the stylish looking editorial photos but we are equally overcome by the “sample closet.” It’s filled with some of the cutest designer kid’s clothing, which is all available for your photo shoot. There are sequined skirts, fresh starched blouses, floral bouquets, leather jackets, pink tutus, glitter shoes and rain boots. It’s almost like a mini Vogue closet.

All you need to bring is your smiles and we are sure the outcome will be the sweetest memories that will never fade.

    Manolo Boutique Slashes Prices

So do you think you can handle Manolos starting at 75% off even if you don’t get to wait on line for three hours or have to fish through piles of unorganized shoes? We think you’ll do just fine without both at the Manolo Blahnik boutique’s super semi-annual sale.

Today, marked the first day of the seasonal clearance sale and we were thrilled with the style selection and size assortment. Prices are marked by sticker dots, which range from $195 for a red dot up to $350 for a green dot. Most shoes and low boots– even highly ornate styles– are priced at $250.

Remember those Manolo Timberlands, worn by J-Lo and were all the rage about 8-years-ago? They come in an assortment of colors and are just $250. Knee high velvet Suwalki boots are $350 but started at a few thousand. Suede with leather trim booties are $250 from $1195. Green and black suede shoes with gems are just $195 from $1255.

The store maybe crowded but at least there isn’t a long line to get in. The sale should run for a week or so but styles and sizes will run low quickly. If you’re looking for a great deal we suggest you switch out of your heels and take a run over to the boutique asap.

    $200 Jeans vs $25 Jeans

When do $200 jeans sell better than $25 jeans? When they are discount William Rast.

When William Rast, Justin Timberlake’s fashion line launched at Target in December, there was a flashy launch party and lots of media hype. We expected the affordable denim and buttery leather jackets to sell out in a flash. Fast forward almost two months, a 50% discount and shoppers can still find the same items from the initial collab launch sadly hanging on racks.

The disappointing sales could be understood if the product were inferior but a quick review of shopper comments reveal that consumers love the jeans, tees and accessories. As a matter of fact, most items received four and five star reviews. One comment on the Target website says, “If you want to be booty fabulous buy these jeans! I’ve gotten more compliments and men asking for my number since I started rocking these jeans. THANK YOU JT!”

Another shopper reviewed the aforementioned leather jacket with these words: “This is a gorgeous jacket. The leather is of a quality rarely seen at this price. William Rast is cutting edge fashion and I paid more than double for a similar jacket in cloth. Slim fitting, nice color. Very flattering on.”

Maybe this situation is a prime example of brand and price psychology. Could it be that discount jeans are less valued than those that sell at Barneys for a premium? Maybe Target customers weren’t educated enough about the fashion worthiness of the pop-star’s eye for style? Perhaps the collection too closely resembled items you could find at your local Gap?

Whatever the reason, we suggest that you take advantage of these deep discounts and size and style section right away. How can one really argue the merit of $25 jeans, $9 tees and $100 leather jackets? Seems better than the The Gap to us. We would just suggest that Mary Kate and Ashley keep the Row away from Main Street.

    D&G 50% Off

It seems a bit late in the season for a half-off sale but it appears as if this horrible weather could be keeping customers in a winter state of mind. If you’re still in the market for bundle-up items, D&G has reduced fall and winter merchandise up to 50% off. What’s better is that the sale is also online, so you don’t even need to put on a coat to take advantage of the discount.

A classic lace and satin halter dress is $288 from $375, fur ankle boots are $623 from $1,245 and a tweed jacket is $698 from $1395. Bags, beachwear and underwear are only reduced 30% and we all know that’s not enough incentive to make purchases from a collection nearing its expiration date.
