Madison Avenue Privately on Sale: Intel from Chanel to Valentino

Temperatures are rising and so are markdown. Today we collected markdown intelligence from some of our favorite Madison Avenue stores. As you can expect, we are just calling this our seasonal amuse bouche. Enjoy!

    Chanel
Chanel sales always take place during the second week of June. Prices on clothing, shoes and accessories will be discounted 40%. Leather bags are almost never marked down, but keep your eyes open for seasonal styles, which are occasionally discounted.
    Amy: 212-535-5505

    Chloe
Presale starts today and customers can shop the markdown by appointment and take their selections home on Thursday. The markdown is 40% on ready-to-wear and shoes and select bags are 30%. The sale goes public after Memorial Day.
    Tara: 212-717-8220

    Dolce & Gabbana
Presale will start on May 23 on Madison and in the new super Fifth Avenue location. We expect that the boutique’s merchandise will be discounted 40%. Usually shoes and handbags follow the same discount.
    Balinda: 212-249-4100

    Giuseppe Zanotti
The sale officially starts Friday but you can make an appointment to start shopping the discounts now. Most summer styles are 30% off. There are lots of similar styles discounted at DSW. Just take note that the retail prices on their site are inflated, so the actually discount might be less than it seems.
    George: 212-650-0455

    Gucci
The presale has not yet officially started but if you work with a sales person you can likely have them set your wish list aside. We expect that the company will begin their private presale this week and will send an update as soon as it occurs. Gucci’s first markdown is usually 50% on clothing and shoes and 30% off handbags.

    Lanvin
The Private Sale is currently under way and spring and summer merchandise has been marked down 40%. Shoes, including some ballerina flats and sneakers are 30% off. Accessories and handbags are 30% off too. We hear there is a great variety of sizes and styles. The sale officially opens to the public on Friday, so it would be best to shop before the crowds.
    Hector: 646-439-0381

    Marni
The sale starts VERY soon, right after Memorial Day. It hasn’t officially begun BUT the main collection is (oops, will be) 40% off and the Addition Collection and Resort are 30%.
    Dana: 212-257-6907

    Missoni
The Missoni isn’t a big player in the presale/private sale game. They just go on sale. Right now the discount ranges from 40% to 50% on clothing, shoes and handbags. No scarves or swimwear are included in the markdown. Additional discounts are taken in June.
    Connie 212-517-9339

    Prada
Presale usually begins right about now with the sale officially starting the first week of June. Last year, however, Prada cut out their presales and became a lot less generous with their markdowns. Last season the brand started with a 50% cut on clothing and shoes and 40% off bags. We are hoping that the numbers will be the same this season.
    Betty: 212-327-4200

    Valentino
The Valentino boutique has started their presale. The discount on shoes, handbags and clothing is 40% off. Most of the Rockstud collection is not included in the markdown but you can use the seasonal discount towards a host of other items. Online shoppers can expect an code to access the sale shortly. For now you can shop the website for deals on Valentino RED.
    Neusa 212-772-6969

    Pre-Sale Barney’s, Bergdorf & Saks

Memorial Day is traditionally known as the first day of the summer season but it’s also the start of sale season. As always, we will be starting our markdown roundups. Department stores usually kick-off the retail sale season with boutiques following closely behind. It’s generally taboo for a brand-owned store to begin a sale before the department stores. After all, a department store has to buy their inventory for a wholesale markup while a brand-owned boutique keeps the extra profit from a straight-to-retail model.

This week, is a big week for presales. Presale season akin to the “quiet period” before a company goes public. You can’t actually buy the merchandise but you can have your broker, oh sorry– sales person, hold your preferred items until the sale officially begins. Most stores take your credit card information and charge your account when the items ship or you pick them up.

In all instances, Chanel and Louboutin will not be marked down at any department store or boutique until the beginning of June. Nonetheless, it’s never too early to plot your purchases and share your acquisition wishes with a good sales person. Second markdown usually begins at the end of June and discounts usually range from 50% to 70% off.

For now, we have a roundup of first markdowns at our favorite department stores:

    Barneys
Pre-sale at Barneys starts Tuesday. Most designer collections and shoes will be discounted 35% off. The official sale starts May 28th. We are happy that the store was a bit restrained with the uber-print trend. We suggest you do the same. Most designers won’t be making such bold statements next season.
    Contact: Kyri 212-833-2088

    Bergdorf Goodman
Wednesday will be the first day of pre-sale at Bergdorf. The discount is 30% off shoes and 40% off clothing. Purchases will be shipped or available in the store on Sunday, May 26. We are fully committed to purchasing an Alaia dress this summer but we still might have to wait until the next markdown.
    Contact: Allison: 212-872-8732

    Saks Fifth Avenue
Pre-sale orders will begin Wednesday and merchandise will be available to be picked up or shipped after the holiday weekend. Shoes will start at a 30% discount while clothing will be discounted 40%. Most designer merchandise is included. We always appreciate the Vionnet collation at Saks, although we believe it could be a bit larger.

    Lisa Perry Groovy Sample Sale

Lisa Perry is hosting a sample sale in the back of her Madison Avenue boutique where her mod and pop designs are between 70% and 90% off. The sale started yesterday and you can be sure that these great looking pieces not hang around for long.

With discounts so high we couldn’t resist checking out the sale ourselves and we are so happy that we did. The back of the store is filled with mostly spring and summer samples with a scattering of heavier wool pieces. Sample size four and six dresses, range from $200 to $300 and most skirts and tops are $200. A black long sleeved wool dress with turquoise circles is $300 as is a gray, black and chartreuse dress. A black and white vinyl and wool raincoat is $200 and a red and blue cotton sleeveless shift with circle pockets is $200.

In addition to the four racks of samples there are two racks of overstock, which contain items in larger size runs that are priced about 70% off. For example, we found purple leather bomber jacket for $418 from $1395.

Our favorite section is always the little girl’s dresses. Kid’s samples are $50 and the open stock is under $70. The children’s sample size is a 4/5 but there are some summer sleeveless dresses and size two dresses in larger size runs. Our favorite items are a baby black dress with silver circle pockets for $50 and a black shift with multi colored circles for $500 too.

Before heading out don’t miss the  home accessories table at the far right of the room. We couldn’t resist the vinyl cupcake pillowcases priced at $10 from $125 and a logo messenger bag for $30. The accessories table also included the famous gumball necklace and pear change purses for $5. Under the accessories table there is an assortment of designer bedding where a queen set with shams was priced at $225.

You can check out more pictures from our groovy shopping trip, right this way.

    Christian Louboutin Sample Sale Hauls

The Christian Louboutin sample sale has been running since Monday and insiders, press and friends and family have been shopping away in the designer’s showroom. Those who didn’t receive invites or don’t have three hours to spend waiting in line can only imagine what’s on the other side of those elevator doors.

Good thing for social media because you don’t have to imagine. Today we curated a showcase of shoppers’ hauls. It’s virtual eye candy. Enjoy!

Silver and Gold at the Buccellati Sale

    By ManhattanMataHari

If are in need of some ultra luxurious giftware or jewelry that will impress even the most refined taste, the Buccellati sample sale should be on your radar. The famed Italian jewelry designer makes approximately 3,000 pieces of jewelry per year, 500 or so of which are one-of-a-kind pieces. Their exclusivity and quality workmanship contributes to their hefty retail prices.

Buccellati rarely goes on sale and holds its value extremely well; we couldn’t resist the opportunity to scoop up sterling tablewear, hollowware, flatware and gifts for around a 50% cut. Inside the sale we found lovely sterling candlesticks mostly priced between $6,000 and $12,000. The most impressive piece, however, was a huge sterling serving tray discounted just over 50% to $20,000 from $44,200. A large silver ice bucket is now $4,200 from $9,000. The sale also includes some more wallet-friendly gift ideas. Small grape dishes are on sale for $425 from $850.

If you’re interested in gifts for yourself you will be happy to find jewelry discounted about 40% off retail. Their impressive selection of signature flower blossom necklaces in silver are priced from $575 to around $1000. Most of the 14K yellow gold collection and watches are still pricey, ranging from $15,000 to $80,000. Who can honestly pass up a yellow gold flower blossom necklace at the relative bargain price of $21,000 from $35,000?

The sale also includes a good selection of brooches and a small selection of rings, earrings and bracelets. As you can see, Buccellati is big pucks but these items really hold their value when you’re making purchases at these sort of discounts.

    Inside the Louboutin Sample Sale

Louboutin may have posted a notice on the door of their office building stating that there is no sale but the story upstairs reads: Sale Sale Sale! The invite-only sample sale started today by appointment. Most of the invitees include a close clique of fashion journalists and bloggers with a sprinkle of celebrity.

Our spies reported from the inside and say that the selection is much better than prior seasons. There are lots of classic style shoes as opposed to the “cray-cray” versions that usually dominate the sale. Also take note that everyone we spoke to came out with some sort of animal print and noted the great array of flats. For the first time, there is also a scattering of men’s shoes and a section of Strass sparklers. From the limited numbers we can assume that they are true samples. Prices range from $250 to $500.

If you’re considering door-busting this sale, we suggest that you use your best technique starting Wednesday. The invite says that the three day sale is for press but it’s really friends and family. (All the press are scheduled to shop Monday and Tuesday.) Be forewarned there are also three layers of clip-boards: one in the lobby, another at the elevator and a third in the showroom. Also, take note the +1 has been eliminated. So, be sure to have a good story and prey for good weather. We have a feeling the line will be very, very long.

Stay tuned we will be posting more intel and photos as the week progresses!

    Buccellatti Sample Sale

Mari Buccellati wasn’t known for giving discounts to customers but modern times call for drastic markdowns. This week Soiffer Haskin will be hosting a Buccellati sale that will include gift items, holloware, tableware, flatware. and one-of-a-kind items. The sale starts Tuesday and runs through Thursday.

We attended the Buccellati sale two years ago when it was hosted in the boutique. Handcrafted fine jewels and watches were all 40% off retail and silver servingware and home accents were 50% off. The pricing varied based upon the metal, but the majority of the sale jewelry was 18K yellow or white gold. Buccellati’s signature flower blossom necklace in normally $1200 but was significantly more affordable after the 40% markdown. A variety of silver trays started at $10,995.
