    The Row’s Private Sale

The Row is known for their mastery of proportion and sophisticated silhouettes. So when a sample sale rolls around, you know there will be throngs of brand fans looking to save a pretty penny on all the things they love.

The three day sale is called ‘Private’ but is open to the public. At last year’s sale all clothing was discounted 70% off and bags are 60% off. Although this sale offers great discounts it can still cost you a pretty penny. The Row’s customer doesn’t blink an eye when faced with a $7000 price tag for a leather coat. Denim leggings retail for $450. You can do the math.

Every year, sweaters are the first items to go. Bags have always been plentiful but go fast. The assortment usually includes totes, backpacks, shoulder bags and satchels. You can expect to find most of the selection from this season’s collection. Even if items are older, the styling of The Row is so classic that you would never know. Sizes run from 0 to 12 but there is only about half a rack of 0s.

The Row has become known for their very civilized sample sale. Dare we say, we enjoy shopping the sale more than Barneys!!

    The Best Upcoming Sample Sales:

It’s been a few weeks since there has been a sample sale worth mentioning. We are now entering the beginning of sample sale season and we can anticipate a flurry of activity before the Christmas retail season begins. Below is a carefully curated selection of our favorite upcoming sample sales.

The Jimmy Choo sample sale is somewhat of a nightmare. There are lines, waits, hoarding, chaos– everything we despise about sample sales. The one redeeming quality is the great pricing. We suggest avoiding the sale all together on Thursday and exploring on Friday if you’re really that curious.

Don’t expect to find any leather goods at this swanky sale. Most other items– clothing, shoes, scarves, ties, home goods and accessories– are reduced about 50% off. This sale usually attracts crazy lines but look out for the VIP report to find out if the wait is worth your time.

Friends and Family Sale: Saks & Shopbop

The hugely popular Shopbop friends and family sale kicked off today. Shoppers can use the code INTHEFAM25 and save an additional 25% off most items on the site. Of course, the three day sale includes some designer exclusions but Shopbop’s list isn’t too bad. You can click here to see the full list of what items to avoid– MCM, Victoria Beckham and Alexander Wang, Tory Burch are a few.

We always suggest you start your shopping in the 60% off department and work your way back. (Merchandise discounted 70% is final sale, and we tend to avoid online shopping if backsies are not allowed.) A Y-3 track jacket comes to just $100 from $360, shredded boyfriend jeans from Goldsign are about $80 from $280 and Vita Fede hoop earrings are $125 from $300.

Not to be outdone, Saks Fifth Avenue started their friends and family sale online too. The discount promotions begins in stores on Thursday and runs through that weekend. The discount is 25% off clothing, shoes and accessories and 20% off jewelry.

If you remember, last season, the Saks friends and family discount was 30% but that’s not the case today. Shoppers can use the code THANKYOU to activate the discount when shopping online. The list of exclusions seems longer than ever. Some brands that are included in the discount are Alice & Olivia, MICHAEL Michael Kors, Milly, Moschino and Vince. The exclusions are so extensive that even Helmut Lang and Rag & Bone aren’t participating.

The first big Saks markdown usually happens during the first week of November. We suggest hanging waiting until then if the items you fancy aren’t included in today’s friends and family.

    The IT-it: Trump Trucker Hat

Lets put politics aside for a moment and take a closer look at the ironic trucker hat. In the early 2000’s, the trucker hat became a mainstream fashion trend. Ashton Kutcher in particular is credited in helping popularize the fashion during his Punk’d days on MTV.

The trucker hat became the gateway to hipster alternative fashion. Though out the past 15-years the trucker hat has maintained it’s place in ironic fashion and street style. It may also be the most iconic fashion statement of the 2016 presidential campaign.

Republican candidate Donald Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ trucker hat is quickly becoming New York’s must have fashion accessory. They sell out almost as soon as they come into the Trump Store– located in the lobby of Manhattan’s Trump Tower. The $20 hats are available in four different color combinations but red is, of course, the most popular.

When we visited the store early last week, the hats were all in stock but the tees were sold out. Surprisingly, there isn’t an abundance of Trump 4 Prez marketing at Trump Tower. The counter traditionally sells golf centric Trump merchandise and now has a small selection of Trump presidential merchandise.

Take note that all candidate merchandise is logged as a campaign contribution. Shoppers are required to register their name, email address, employer and occupation so the campaign can report the info to the Federal Election Commission.

We caught up with Rob Garson who recently purchased the said hat. Garson is the managing partner of GS2Law, an international intellectual property law firm, and says he initially started wearing the hat as performance art. Reactions have ranged from “raised eyebrows by some, knowing nods by others, and smiles from many. I also don’t think my doorman is speaking to me anymore,” Garson says.

Despite there risk of alienating his doorman, Garson says he will continue to wear his hat until Trump does something so despicable that he can’t. “It’s so exciting!”

    The Best Columbus Day Sales

Celebrating finding America isn’t what it used to be. Banks are open and so is the the NYSE. Chances are, if you’re not in a union– you have work. Even so, it is the perfect day to go “sailing.” Shopping online is just too easy, especially when online discounts are better than much of what you’ll find in stores. Here are a few of our holiday favorites:

    Barneys Warehouse
The famous Warehouse (website) is offering shoppers an additional 30% off almost everything on the site and an extra 40% off clearance merchandise. Lanvin python shoes are under $400 from almost $1900 and a small circle fringed cross body bag is $48 from $145. If you’re looking to splurge on a big ticket item, take a look at this Proenza Schouler PS11 croc tote that comes to just $8000-ish from $18,500.

    The Outnet
A curated collection of merchandise is an extra 25% off select styles. Metallic Nicholas Kirkwood pumps are $225 from $675, a Roland Mouret asymmetric top is about $250 from $800 and a classic black Stella McCartney dress is $500 from $3270. (That’s about 85% off!)

    Banana Republic
Select merchandise is 50% off and all the rest is discounted 40%. Boyfriend jeans come to $50 from $99, a grey peacoat is $150 from $300 and a faux leather short sleeve top is $42 from $75. We suggest you take advantage of this season’s collection if you’re a fan of Marissa Webb. She has already stepped down as creative director.

    Tibi Online Sample Sale

Tibi’s effortlessly cool essentials are available online at up to 80% off during the company’s sample sale. The online-only sale runs through the weekend and ends Monday.

Most of the merchandise seems to have come from this past season’s summer collection. We would suggest the sale would be more appropriately named a ‘clearance sale’ as there are no samples. Sale highlights include, a strapless cotton shirt dress that’s reduced to $155 from $625, a gorgeous crouched vest is $110 from $550 and a white ribbon midi-skirt is $165 from $550.

Take note, that all sales are final. So be sure that whatever you buy you will want to wear next summer.

    Scoop Sale EXTRA 70% Off

Starting Thursday, Scoop will be hosting a sale where already discounted items will be an extra 70% off. This promotion is online only and no code is needed. Prices will be applied directly during checkout.

Some items we will be looking out for are this 3.1 Phillip Lim shirt dress, Citizens flared denim and Rag & Bone slip-on sneakers. The sale runs through Monday, October 12. Take note, that all sales are final.

    Coming Soon: Hermes Sample Sale

This is turning out to be a big month for Hermes lovers. Later this week the Hermes-Apple Watch will be available at big Orange and the Fruit. Those who aren’t satisfied with glitzy technology on a strap can hold out for the French retailer’s sample sale that will take place later this month.

    Peepy and Mother Lee

Last year, the Hermes sale is better than the past several sales but brand veterans were still were not very impressed. Most everything was priced at 50% off retail. Shoppers can expect to find a nice assortment of scarves and enamel bracelets.

The last sale had no leather bags, wallets or small leather items. We also didn’t find any leather bracelets or belts. Ties were plentiful as were shoes and boots. The best items, were the Cape Cod watches, gloves and hats. The sale also included a bit of china and clothing.

One thing that was abundant were the limits. For obvious reasons, each shopper could only purchase three scarves, five bracelets and 10 ties. We heard that some sales people will hold scarves so that you can take another pass at the checkout line.
