NYFW: Five Minutes with … Rebecca Minkoff

Rebecca Minkoff began her eponymous label in 2001 with a five-piece capsule collection. She gained attention in 2005 after she designed the Morning After Bag – her bags are named after “the stages of love”. Minkoff relaunched womenswear in 2009, focusing on boho, feminine styles with a rock chick edge. Today the brand is known for its edgy accessories, and stud detailing is a signature aesthetic and is stocked by more than 900 retailers worldwide, among them Selfridges in the UK and US department stores like Bloomingdales and Nordstrom. I sat down with the designer at her New York Fashion Week launch of ‘I am Many’ to discuss the brand and the idea behind her newest campaign.

LD: For one who’s always put females first, how do you think that’s contributed to the brand’s success?

RM: It’s only natural that once I got moving that it was time to pay that forward. I know it’s been part of my success but I have no way to quantify it.

LD: Who are some of your female mentors or women that you admire?

RM: I want to get rid of the idea that we have to have mentors. A woman who inspires me is Jessica Alba as an entrepreneur and founder of a company. She has really put in the blood, sweat and tears into her company. She is a mom of three. She is someone that I’m always like, “Yeees.”

LD: What way has the Minkoff girl changed over the years and how?

RM: I think the Minkoff girl originally liked me for my bags. That’s what I started with and then we grew up together. I was the same age as my customer and then I know that I can’t forget who I was at 27 and who I was at 23. I want to make sure that the young people that are just about to buy their first bag that I am that person for them. So I really have taken it back and grown for those who are 45 and older.

LD: Do you think it’s hard to speak to the 27-year-old girl now and the 45-year-old woman?

RM: I think you have to offer different products. The messaging is very much the same because as woman, and as multi-faceted woman, we are all hitting these milestones. You know you’re about to hit it or you’re close and you’re seeing other people around you hit it. So I think it allows for more inclusivity.

LD: What’s your goal with the ‘I Am Many’ campaign?

RM: What I would really love is if more people would share the different sides of themselves. That they are emboldened and more confident because if you’re just by yourself doing one thing and you fail, you think, “I suck.” If today you think ‘I was a great mom but a shitty boss,’ ‘Yesterday I was a great athlete but a shitty mom,’ then you can take confidence in the things you are good at and lean on those.

LD: Since you’ve started, how as the culture of fashion changed for women?

RM: It’s more inclusive. Not inclusive enough when it comes to race, color, opportunities. I think that conversation is just starting and needs to get a lot stronger.

    LD: So what’s next?

RM: I launch my podcast on September 18th. I thought you just had to flip a switch and say, ‘talk to me’ but it’s so much work. It’s more work than I ever imagined but it’s really fun. When you have been doing the same thing for 13-years, it’s really fun to do something new and learn something.

LD: Isn’t it hard to start a new project when you’re already stretched for time?

RM: I think that’s where the team comes in. I think not enough woman can admit that they have a whole team that helps them. I am very vocal that I am able to do so many things because I have a whole team. I am able to leave the office because someone says, “I got this, you go ahead.” You don’t have any more hours in the day than I do but I have more brick layers.

    Barneys Gift Card Promotion

Not sure what to do this weekend? We suggest you head to Barneys.

Through Sunday, Barneys shoppers can earn a $25 gift card for every $250 you spend. Purchases over $500 will get you even more. Accrued gift cards are redeemable for merchandise from September 28 through October 21.

The only exclusions are Louboutin shoes (handbags are included in the promo), Chanel and Celine. That leaves lots of the prime fall fashion from which to choose (or shoes.) Gucci, Fendi, and Dior are included in the promotion. We would suggest going for a logo Fendi tote, a Dior visor (for ski season ????), a Balenciaga logo cardigan, a Prada puffer or maybe a lipstick print skirt.

The ‘Infinity’ promotion is available at Barneys stores nationwide, on the website and at BarneysWarehouse. (Designer collections are an extra 30% off!)

Be warned, however, Barneys will most likely not extend the dates if the cards aren’t used during the specified window of time. So be sure to enjoy your meal at Fred’s and go back next week to use those gift cards!

NYFW: Five Minutes with Sally LaPointe

    Interview by Cameron Towsen: FrontRowEdit

Sally, congratulations on another beautiful show. Can you tell me more about your collection and inspiration for this season?

SLP: Thank you very much! Yes, this season was inspired by the comic book East of West, a Science Fiction western set in a dystopian America. I wanted the collection to reflect the mood of the books, which was a mix of traditional and modern. It was an exploration of color and material.

How do you and the team forecast and plan for the season ahead?

SLP: We plan very far in advance. Being a small team, it is what we have found works for us. I’m not a last-minute kind of designer, I don’t operate on stress. We start each season about six months out. I am actually working on Fall 2019 right now so that should tell you something! I feel lucky for the team I have, they keep me on track.

How important is a show location/set design to tell your story?

SLP: I think it’s everything. I love the drama and the 360 experience you get with a show. I love scouting new places to show, and working with my production team Dizon Inc to bring the collection to life with the set.

In what way would you describe the SLP girl?

    SLP: Cool, easy and luxe.

Where is the most offbeat place you have found inspiration?

SLP: Great question! I find inspiration in a lot of different places, I would say one of my favorites was about how Lillian Bassman discarded decades’ worth of unprocessed film only to be found years later and developed. I did a whole collection inspired by this.

How did you start in the fashion industry and where did you study?

SLP: I started in the fashion industry knowing nothing, and no-one. I graduated from RISD with my best friend Sarah Adelson and moved to NYC. We both got jobs working corporate for a few years before we decided to just go ahead and start our label. It was a lot of trial and error, but we feel proud that we are 100% self-taught and have built a company organically with a strong team around us.

Since you started out, how do you think the culture of fashion has changed?

SLP: The culture of fashion has changed so much since I started. If I’m honest, it feels a bit political at times, which distracts from the core of fashion which is a beautiful product, raw talent, and having something meaningful to say.

What is next for the brand?

SLP: We have so many new things happening with the brand. We have some great new partnerships coming soon, we have launched a capsule e-commerce collection on our website, so there are some major things shifting right now which are very exciting to me.
