Weekend Shopping: Obsessions & Impulses

In a continuing series of 2021 contradictions, Chanel raised its bag prices again this week. The last price hike was in May and took customers by surprise as health concerns and financial struggles seemed to be at an all-time high.

Most customers voiced their opposition and expressed that the price increase came at a bad time and "was in very bad taste." Another observer rightfully stated that "all these slight increases will eventually add up." The numbers seem boggling, as of today, a Medium Classic bag is priced at $7400. A Maxi size is $8000.

I don't believe that the most recent $300 price increase will deter many Chanel shoppers from desiring a bag. To put prices in perspective, a 25cm Birkin is $9850 (in swift leather), a yellow gold Cartier Love bracelet is $6400, a Van Cleef Vintage Alhambra necklace with 10 motifs is $8800, and a Rolex Datejust 36mm stainless steel watch with a Jubilee bracelet retails for about $7000.

If you look closely, Boy Bags have not gone up in price as significantly. In four years the Large/New Medium has only gone up in price $400. If you're looking for a good deal on a pre-owned bag, I suggest you set your sights on a 225 or 226. The retail values are currently very deflated. Getting back to more reasonable shopping. Bergdorf Goodman is running a promotion where you can save an additional 30% of sale merchandise. Here are Manolo Blahnik slingbacks for $296 from $885, a Bottega Veneta quilted skirt with chains is $577 from $1650, and Givenchy sandals are $290 from $700.

DSW is secretly discounting all of its Gucci shoes an additional 25% off when you add them to your cart. Sylvie loafers with a block heel are $374 from $890, strawberry print sneakers are $337 from $550, and fur-lined Princetown slides are $562 from $890.

If you've been deprived of shopping the Ssense private sale you should keep checking back to the site as it's continuously adding more merchandise to the public portion of the sale. A Rick Owens puffer with a funnel neck is $1300 from $2270, new style Saint Laurent pumps are $440 from $845, and this purple wool Saint Laurent Jamie bag is $1474 from $1890.

If you're still in need of shoes, Savannah's is clearing out past season shoes at 70% off. These Alexander McQueen pumps are $267 from $900 snd these Manolo booties are $600 from $1200.

Looking back, Saks discounts topped 70% off. This Loewe bag is still available for $1225 from $2750, this Prada dress is 70% off or $447 from $1500, and this Givenchy mini Mystic is $1743 from $2500. Click this way to see the full blog post with lots of great outfit inspiration.

The most extreme discounts can be found at Bergdorf Goodman (and Neiman Marcus). Sale merchandise is an additional 30% off, which brings the total savings over 70% off on many items.

There is a great assortment of Manolo Blahnik shoes in the sale section. Sizes are spotty, so it's best to filter to just your size. Moda Operandi is offering an extra 10% off sale items with the code SALE10. The Valentino selection happens to be very good and the discounts, after the promotion, top 60% even on handbags. This mini clutch is $790 from $1745 and this belt is $450 from $1000. This Balenciaga tote comes to $670 from $1500 and pool slides are $290 from $500. The promotion ends Monday.

Looking back on the week, our favorite discounts were found at Net-A-Porter. Sale merchandise is an extra 15% off, which brings the total savings to over 75% on some items. Among the shoes are these Chloe boots for $700 from $1175 and Fendi slides are $350 from $700. You can click over this way to see everything we found in the sale.

If you're looking for new season thrills I suggest you set your sights on Italist. The site is a destination that I love to shop at the beginning of the season because it oftentimes has the hottest items for even a little less.

Prada nylon items are a great example. The site is fully restocked for the season. This nylon pouch is $360 from $575 US. This wicker and nylon bag is selling out fast and is $1533 from $1750. Here is the smoking hot Prada Cleo is $1809 from $1990 US and the Prada Odette is $2000 from $2350 US. Italist: New Season Finds & 70% Discounts

We are finding ourselves at that time of the season where discounts are extreme but most of what is available isn't very aesthetically desirable or might still be too expensive even with the steepest markdowns. It's also that time of year where the new season of fashion begins to hit stores and excite shoppers with all of its newnesses.

The latest merchandise is unlikely to be found on sale but there are a few places to find a slight price advantage. Italist is one destination that we love to shop as the hottest pieces can sometimes be found for less money than other retail formats.

Prada nylon items are a great example. The site is fully restocked for the season. This nylon pouch is $360 from $575 US. This wicker and nylon bag is selling out fast and is $1533 from $1750. There are some good Golden Goose finds but sizes are spotty. The kid's Golden Goose should be a consideration too as they run up to a size 39.

We spotted this Fendi ID bag for $1353 from $2590 US, lace Manolo Blahnik Hangisi are $683 from $1100, and this Acne Studio wrap coat is $740 from $1300. Here is a Versace tee for $180 and Jimmy Choo shoes for $360.

If you're looking for the very best deals, you should change the sort to older seasons. It might take some scrolling but there is always something good hidden.

Nordstrom: Final Markdown

All those gift items we've been eyeing but having purchase are now ripe for picking. Nordstrom just started it's final markdown. Prices are reduced up to 70% and there are no shortages of items from which to choose.

The most highly reduced shoes are only available in one or two sizes. These Chloe platform sandals are $225 from $750 and Jimmy Choo pumps are $315 from $1050.

There are really no reduced handbags worth mentioning but there is a lot of clothing in the sale mix. Some of the designer clothing standouts include this Balmain skirt that's $500 from $1650, this Etro blouse is $390 from $1300, and this Balenciaga blazer is $727 from $2500.

Remember, Nordstrom is great at price matching. If you see something for less money at another store, make the purchase and call for an adjustment. Nordstrom's great customer service never fails....
