Singles Day is the Chinese version of an anti-Valentines day. Really, what’s there not to love? Celebrating social freedom with shopping.
The shopping-focused day was first started in 1993, by a group of Chinese college students, to celebrate the state of being single. The date November 11 (or 11/11) was chosen because of the ones– obviously. Elevens, according to numerology, is a “master number” which signifies intuition, insight, and enlightenment.
We’ve started to think of Singles Day as ‘Treat Yourself Day.’ After all, we’ve never turned down an occasion to shop and buy something nice. Retailers are jumping in on the trend too. Singles Day is currently referred to as the new “Black Friday.”
