MoMa x Uniqlo is Fine Art

April 3, 2014 by Lila Delilah

Why don’t we all agree that the best part of going to a museum is hitting the gift shop afterwards. It’s not that we don’t love art but how many people are lucky enough to go home with a Pollock or Weiner?  Despite our love of artful gift shops, we were dubious of Japenese retail giant, Uniqlo’s capsule collection with the Museum of Modern Art.

The collections is appropriately dubbed SPRZ NY (for Surprise NY) and we sure were. The limited-time collection consists of about 200 pieces highlighting some of the greatest modern artists. What’s even better is that the fashion and displays are almost as good as the famous images.
The second floor of the Fifth Avenue Uniqlo flagship features a variety of merchandise with iconic designs from the likes of Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Jack Pierson. The collection is also being sold online here.

Some of the collection highlights are the $20 tote bags. It’s hard to choose which one to get. We personally love both Warhol’s Campbell soup cans and Basquiat’s contemporary symbols. The $20 men’s polos featuring Keith Haring’s little dog are equally as attractive. The large assortment of $6 bandannas are also a great choice.

One of best parts about this collection is the Starbucks that’s nestled into the middle of the gallery-like set up. Although it feels a bit like an airport, it’s quite relaxing to sit with a Macchiato and contemplate the fine (retail) art. Now, if only more stores would consider doing the same, we might never go home.
